I've poked around in the various help and wiki articles, and while clipping is emphasized as an effect of using a Threshold component, I have found nothing that says if the unselected branches behind the Switch are clipped, leaving only the selected branch visible to the renderer.

I suppose there is a way to use a Threshold with a Switch, if necessary. That could be a little unwieldy with more than two or three branches, however.

Yes, Switch tells the renderer to ignore sources that aren't selected (if you use Filter Forge 7, "selector" is a mappable input).
The Map Switch works similarly.

So, perhaps I was a bit optimistic. It seems that my unselected sub-trees are getting processed (I suspect the bit-map components are at fault), because my layout branch is not as responsive under a switch if the texturing components are included, but switched off.

It's been a real disappointment, but I've still got a few angles to test.

Well, it appears that bitmap-based components are the exception. Even though they are in a branch that's switched off, they're still initializing. That's the problem I've been trying to get around, that few seconds delay that kills the responsiveness of the branch that's switched on. The initialization occurs with switching and threshold clipping.
