So I have a need to create variations of textures that you see on computer cases.
Specifically to start off with the same type of black and silver textures you see on Dell computer cases. Before I get started building from a blank page I looked around and found one old v2 filter that looks like it would be a useful starting place to build on. https://www.filterforge.com/filters/9926.html Is it better to start from a blank page when building filters or is it ok to re-purpose and build on filters to expand them when making new filters? Figured I would ask before I spend any time on this. Thanks |

Hmmm. I didn't even think to ask when I updated Emme's Landform filter. I think I read something about a filter needing to improve on or extend functionality without greatly altering the user experience when submitting a modified filter. The gist of it was that you do not submit a simple variation on an existing filter. It did not say "your own filter" explicitly, so I implicitly took that to mean I could use a filter as a starting point and branch off... and the branch was accepted to the filter library.
So, there's at least one precedent. I know there's a lot of sharing and branching going on in forum threads, too. For personal use, I'd say the sky is the limit, and if you want to submit to the library, submit it to a forum thread of your own to get people's yay or nay. |

To add to David's response, the use of a little common sense and giving credit where credit is due is important. The sky is the limit, but giving credit in the About section of a modified filter for a major concept or piece of code that you have used is a good practice and common courtesy. My 2 cents, 3 with inflation.

Will keep all that in mind and thank you for the replies.
Absolutely will make sure to give credit for the starting point. |
