I'm currently working to level up my Sketch Cleaner filter and was wondering if I should divide it into two versions; a complex and simple version.
Ironically, in the original description of Sketch Cleaner, it was said that it was simple -- well, the lastest version has 30 different controls that say otherwise. Sketch Cleaner literally started with only two controls (Line Sensitivity and Line Thickness), but now it's kind of expanded to a filter that I'm pretty much going to have to write a manual for -- no seriously, I probably will.
Although the speed of the filter is still fine tuned and fast, I was wondering if it would be a good idea or a bad idea to create a simpler, more conventional version of the filter called Sketch Cleaner Lite or if most filter users would be able to use the current version without much of a problem despite all the controls. Any advice is most appreciated, thank you ^_^ -Zephos

Yes, two versions is good. I've thought about this for some of my more complex filtes.

Phew! Finally finished refining Sketch Cleaner Lite and was able to throw 20 controls out of the window before submitting it -- felt like Spring Cleaning! ^_^ Happiness!
The main version of Sketch Cleaner is getting souped up though... just curious, does anyone know the record for most practical controls on a filter? Just wondering. -Zephos

Zephos I would submit two versions of it; one with the minimum basic controls for the user that doesn't want to be overwelmed with alot of controls....and an advanced version with all the controls for the advanced users..... Steve

Thanks for the advice guys ^_- Now that I know that 30 controls isn't a gi-nourmas amount, I'm quite relieved! Still, I like the idea of having a lite version of the filter. When the filters are updated, a Sketch Cleaner Lite should be available along side the regular Sketch Cleaner (Leveling up hopefully soon!). ^_-
Ahahahah, oh yeah jffe, I looked through some of Voldemort's filters and although I didn't find any in particular with ungodly amounts of controls, when I saw a filter count of almost 270 I was like "HOLY !@#%!". Well, I knew Voldemort did a lot of filters, but that's pretty much more than a 1/6 of the entire Filter Forge library. Simply amazing... ^_^ -Zephos

Yeah, I always used to tease volde about the number of filters he made, and some of the ones with like 20-30+ controls. I like variety, and being able to alter/change the filters too, but if ya can't do it with 10-12 controls, then ya just need to buckle down, and/or maybe think about splitting it into 2 different filters really. I mean come on, we could all go back and add 20-50 more controls to our filters, but why ya know, either it does something, or it's just a random artsy maker thing, and no one's gonna use all 50 controls anyways, they'll just hit random. Ultimately, whatever works for *you* as a filter designer is fine, and we can always go back and "tighten" up other people's filters/controls up later for our own use anyways right.

i find this a VERY limited view. and i AM one of those 'artsy maker' people. i find the dismissive quality in that use of those terms quite offensive. 'artsy' all too often seems to carry a tone of 'oh, you poor little creative person, you'.
and if photoshop, that poor little 'artsy maker thing' only had 50 controls, you'd return the thing as defective. i mean, no one is ever going to learn something with more than 50 controls, like photoshop. pheh! If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

----"Artsy", just means not for everyday use in this case, or a filter that would produce a difficult to explain result.
----I suppose depending on where in the world you live, in culture, and time, "art" in and of itself might have some kind of value. Where I live, it's value is about a fraction of a penny on the dollar, so perhaps I come across as "against" artsy stuff, when I'm not really, I just have no real interest in it for long. It's not like anyone who ever even stumbles across this site, doesn't have hundreds, if not thousands, of files of computer art on their computer, that will never be used offscreen, or seen by anyone offline. It's tough to find value in something that affects hardly anyone (since virtually no one sees it), and is of no real world value. That said, I've seen some really cool artsy filters made with FF, I just wish they had fewer, and better labelled controls (the latter being something I've been guilty of too, not naming controls in a useful way).
----As far as comparing a filter, to the Photoshop program, well, that's apples and oranges really. But I'm sure there'll be a small contigent of folks of who don't mind having 50 controls on a filter, I'll just be hitting random a couple times, and if it doesn't do something cool, well, there's what 1800+ more to check out.
----Anyways, no hard feelings, at least not on my end, we're all gonna look at things a little different depending on personal context, and unfortunately, mine has little value for random computer art, since I already have a few gigs of it, and it has no use or value to me.
