Does Profile Gradient component not have a way to get a smooth (without a harsh line somewhere) if the image size is not square?

If I use e.g. a image size of 1000 x 1500 px, I get a nasty discontinuation about 2/3 down.

The other gradients don't have this problem.
Of course I could use the Free Gradient instead, but it would be nice if the basic Profile Gradient would work ok.

In most cases Free Gradient is a better choice if you are dealing with non-square images and the continuation can be handled in many ways (flat, repeat, mirror). Profile Gradient is square only. I rarely use Profile Gradient anymore. My 2 cents.
