Stand alone always. (I assume this provides slightly better performance)

I installed it as a plugin....though maybe standalone may have been a better idea. But I am in photoshop all th time anyway, so its no big difference smile:)

I mostly use FF in PSP -- where I'm usually doing "photo" type stuff and use the effects in layers. Plus I like to compare variations quickly, by just clicking the "eye" on the layers.

I almost always use it in standalone mode when creating a filter. There are rare exceptions where I take it to Photoshop though for testing with unusual image elements though ^_^

I usually use it stand alone so it has more available ram.

RAM doesn't matter much, unless you use large images, say 3000x3000 and larger. Plus, Filter Forge is very good at managing memory, so you can render huge images even on a small amount of RAM. I wouldn't worry about this.

PS as the OS shell

XP as a PS plug-in? I like it. smile:D Better yet XP and PS as a FF components. The first think I would do is plug the XP component in a threshold to clear away some of the clutter. Next I would plug the repeat curve into PS so I could have multiple concurrent instances. smile;)

I use mine as a Photoshop plugin just about all the time because I haven't made a filter (I must be one of the few in these forums who's never crafted one yet), and because I mix it up with other tools when layering and makin' magic.

I didn't know there'd be performance gains when running as standalone — what kind of a boost can I expect to see?
I'm enjoying using Filter Forge to create http://torley.com/textures

99.9% of my usage is in stand alone. Once, I used it with photoshop when I needed to crop an image before using my filter. smile:)
