Everyone loves the Life Saver but sometimes you want to see how the effect appears on a different image.
Just a few possible requirements off the top of my head... -Seamlessly Tiles (Is this really that important for showing off effects?) -600x600 px (That's what we're used to) -High Quality (Ideally Not Compressed) -Proper License (Don't want to get sued) You guys have any further suggestions or images you'd like to nominate? (You can post a compressed preview for now) |

No, it shouldn't be in my opinion. FF is pursuing the tiling mantra and automatically tiling everything that goes into the library.....so it should probably be a tilable image.....unless FF decides to stop the library auto-tile. I would suggest at least an image with a full range of color and detail.....and does not have any depleted detail areas in it. The preserver has a couple of washed-out areas which can mislead someone to thinking that their filter is no good.....like what happened to Carl..... Steve

Maybe one with a .66666 aspect ration for photographers.

![]() Seriously though, a non-square image is a problem for certain effects so that might not be the best solution. |

I'd like to see something with depth [ not a landscape but an image that can be tiled ]most importantly, and it would be nice to have a larger colour range/detail, which then would be the opposite to the LP............... Carl

Excellent idea!!! I forgot about that one..... The shallow depth of the preserver is only geared to maxed size pixels (600)..... Steve

actually, having one with the no detail areas is a good thing. would carl have found he needed to change some things otherwise?
and yes, more color or even a color gradient would be good and likewise the depth. also, you dont have to wait for FF to change the default image. you dont have to have the life preserver as your default image. take any 600 x 600 image in the .bmp format and swap it out with the 'default.bmp' image in filter forge\previews. just make sure the one you put in there is also named 'default.bmp' and is truly a .bmp image. and if you really want it right, in not only the main preview window, you'll have to change out the other ones as well. attached is a screenshot where i did just that; i replaced the life preserver with steve's rose. notice the smaller preset previews are still the life preserver, but that's just a matter of making a smaller image and swapping out the default there too. ![]() If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

and do be careful on these. images MUST be EXACTLY the same size as the defaults or you'll crash FF.
also, whenever doing this type of mod be sure to BACK UP THE ORIGINALS!!! If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Great Idea Uberzev!
it would be really tough to come up with an image that met everyone's requirements but not impossible I don' think... Requirements? (anything to add? opinions?) 1. Seamlessly tiles - even though it's not neccessary for image effects it's still necessary for pattern effects that are based on an image. 2. 600x600 - yes (easy to keep it standard and quick?) 3. High Quality - definity! 4. Proper License - absolutely! 5. Full Range of Color and Detail - as much as possible! ideally all primary and secondary colors plus solid black and white... clear detail and blurred areas (out of focus might give some depth?) any ideas about subject matter? the color requirement makes it quite a bit tougher... a thought would be a still life type photo of crayons or some other art tools? ... or some books? or what else? ![]() Sherry |

i'll throw this into the mix too. what image will we be using as a default if we do get to import a second image, at the same time, into the filter? or, will there be no default and it's just something that has to be loaded by the user? just a thought.

Kraellin we're not going to change the default image. This is just a way to show off how an effect looks on an additional image we're all familiar with.

uber, ok. i guess i'm missing the point then since i almost always use a set of different images to view my filters on before releasing them.
so, what you're looking for then, i think, is that ONE image you could load up that would essentially do the same as my set of images as a check... yes, no? If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I agree, uber. As a photographer I have plenty of "people pictures" and inevitably load one of them for testing.

Maybe there should be a set of pictures as in a portrait, landscape etc as often when one does test filters they suit certain pic and not others, so maybe one isn't really solving anything.......... Carl

The problem (for me) with the life preserver is it can't convey certain types of effects. For example, this preview does not convey this type of result. But, using my photo for all filters would not convey the needs of other filters or tiling.
This might sound nuts, but here's what I've thought of. The photo could be of a framed portrait hanging on a wall. The wall could be painted paneling. The frame would be square, oval, or circular. In the frame would be a photo (not painting) of a horse's face. Or a human face. And with this we would have the ability to tile, we would have a basic symmetrical shape (the frame), and we would have an image in the frame that could demonstrate natural media and other art effects. |

Why not have one default image for each category of filter.. in addition to the global default?

Vlad could use a scenic picture of his neck of the woods (like the Irfanview guy does) for the misc or stone category.

That's not such a bad idea~ I understand from the posts I've read they are based out of Alexandria Va? Correct me if I'm wrong on that. If I am correct that means he is near 'Old Town Alexandria' which is a 'beautiful' area and also... and a historic one. It has tons of charm~ Not to mention the Potomac river wouldn't be that far away... and the C.O. canal that runs along the Potomac. ((Sorry I've lived all over the U.S. and used to work outside D.C. ----> which brings me to... he could use photos of the Capitol; he's certainly close enough.)) Anyway I like the life preserver but I'm open to other images~ Whatever everyone decides. Jean |
