Anybody know how to cut the work field in half without using a gradient? (half black and half white for example)

Thanks!

try a step curve with a tone curve (if i'm understanding what you're after here.).
If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Yeak, I would say the same thing.....desaturate and use either linear or step to create a straight vertical curve.....

I think you'll still need a gradient as a source for the tone curve...

Another method without a gradient (but is more complex) could be to use a perlin noise component with a very large scale and a stretch value of 100 (and angle of 90 if wished) and plug that into a threshold adjustment (with smooth = 0). Here you'll have to adjust the threshold amount and perlin noise parameters to get the black vs. white to cut exactly in half.

What's the matter with using a gradient, though?

i want to be able to do this with an image of any dimensions, to cut it in half vertically or horizontally...

i've seen a snippet out there which makes a gradient that's not restricted to square images, maybe i'll just use that.

Yeah, the gradients do go weird on non-square images. And uberzev's Proportional Gradient snippet is a clever solution for the problem.
