Here's my best attempt so far. The downside of my technique is that its slow and limited to 8 fissures per crack.

Anyone think they can do better?

I think the randomness makes it very good. From your sample in the User Gallery, I might suggest another blend branch for map reaction to image edges (appears to follow relief) to avoid an overlay appearance......

Here's another new method. I'm still not satisified though.

hmmm, normally i can download a filter posted in the forums, directly to FF. today, on your link, uber, all i get is a web page with the filter .xml code. i wonder if that's related to the library pages being down at the moment.

No it's because I hosted the ffxml on my website. You might try a right-click download. smile:)

Using the Stones noise module through a noise distortion I got this result. Some of the cracked areas look good I think, but others are too extreme (still tweaking)

Oh, I thought it was the same animal from the "Cracked" title.....

I'm still kinda liking the organic nature of your first method here......almost like root patterns.....

Maybe laying down an unbroken layer of cracks using slightly roughed up cell noise.....blending it with the first method.....maybe pre-differencing it and then blending it back in so it fits together......

carl,

right click the filter and pick 'save target as' and browse to your 'my filters' folder in c:\documents and settings\{user name}\application data\filter forge\my filters. that did the trick for me. works now just fine.

and holy crap, uber. i didnt expect it to be quite so complex. i can see why you're looking for an optimization! smile:)

ok, i just looked at the 2nd one, uber. you certainly cut the size down. that's a lot simpler.

one thing i dont get, though. if you look at the preset and compare it to the rendered texture, they dont seem to match up at all, which is quite odd. if you look at 'crackaplease', that one seems right preset to render, but crackacracka seems quite off in that regard. quite an odd preset to render out like it does.
