The Radial Repeat idea gave some boost for my fractal filter experimentation.
Since it is possible to branch out any number of branches at once, it made some more complex patterns manageable. The main limitation is that you can't overlap the branches, but that is a minor inconvenience and somewhat inconsequential for most fractal images.
Here's how it is shaping up -- the basic, classic fractal tree:

Not surprisingly, not real fast. Render time 4-6 minutes with antialiasing, 1-1.5 minutes without.

New endeavor along this line -- "Mandelbrot" style.
Not that it is a real mandelbrot, but with a rather fascinating combination of offsets, this one has 6,250,000 branches made in 4 iterations, yet renders in just 13 seconds with antialiasing (on my new computer, that is -- laptop would take about a minute).
