I'm trying to improve the Impasto filter by adding visible brush strokes. As it is now, the filter can show thick gobs of paint, but not the finer detail created by brush hairs. I'm attempting this by adding some offset to the perlin noise that's already in place for creating the height of the paint. But when I add the offset, the height flattens out. It seems odd because the height input hasn't changed in contrast. I don't want those thick gobs of paint to flatten out when adding brush detail. Any suggestions?

You *might* try adjusting the contrast of the Perlin Noise ? Just a random idea, it certainly may not work for ya, but I thought I'd throw something out there ha-ha.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Here is a snippet from the filter. It's the 'brush hair length' control that's reducing the height. I left in some extra elements in case they're contributing to the problem. Thanks in advance for looking at this.

You need to reduce the noise.
You're right, as you add noise to the hight map, it looks like it flattens out. The final image still goes to the same light/dark values, but in a much smaller space, which results in an actual or perceptual averaging of the image. Say you take 30 pixels in a row, in the first image their lightness value might go from say, 20% to 90%. In the second image that same area might go from 0% to 100% lightness 10 times, which makes it look like a flat 50%. You also might want to offset the "paint" noise before blending it with the "canvas" noise, (use the "screen" blending mode). Just a thought. |

Thanks tigerAspect; I'll try that and post the results.

adjust the brightness of layer that is input into height.
and the brightness will control height or say add levels and the white points will control height saurabh.gayali@gmail.com |

Thanks uglyboys. It's been awhile since I've worked on this filter, but if I return to it I'll try that technique. Cheers!
