Hi All guys

I would like to do a filter wich can reproduce the attached Image done with Phoshop blur and a gradient mask

The problem I have is the "selection "behaviour in FF who can't allow to blurr the selection.( it is like you blur a selection mask smile:cry:

I didn't found any way to take the background ( selected in photoshop ) and blur it following a linear gradient form the bottom of the image ( no blur ) to the top of the image ( blurred)

Do you have any idea / advise to do so ? See Image Here

Thak you in advance for your kind advise

All the best

Hello JLChameleon and Welcome to the fun...Been thinking about this one and first things first....The layers need to be flattened in order for FF to process the image..
Heres something I put together for your purpose..Hope its helpful or at least a start.....When using gradients on images that are non-square my advice is always use ThreeDees Proportional Gradient...Great snippet at that also...It saves a lot of headaches later.... smile:)

Anyway this is what I used in this filter...

Heres another version with a Tone Curve added for positioning of the gradient...
Also the selection is not affected by the blur..So you can select the model and everything else will be affected by the blur...

i havent looked at CF's way of doing what he did, but i can tell you one way to do a background blur filter IF your foreground is brighter or darker than the background. you simply make a mask filter based on light/dark and then blur the one you want blurred.

there's probably other ways to do it, maybe based on rgb values or something else.

also, if you have paint shop pro, there is a background blurring tool that was put in after about version 9 or 10.
If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Your filter is VERY good !!! Thank you

Now I'm trying to understand how it works ... this is another problem smile;)) The way you use frames is very interesting ...

I realize that this king of filter is maybe a little bit to hard to undersand for a fresh newbie as me smile;))

Hi Craig

In fact I'm using photoshop . This kind of job is very easy to do with photoshop , nevertheless I wanted to know how to do so with FF which have a very different way than photoshop, in order to create a very easy to use filter ( as alienSkin bokeh) for everyday use .

I realise that the photoshop way can't be just used inside FF as is ... but that I have to learn this very new ( and exciting way )

Thank you for your advise

I have a great one right now too, but the problem is that it's not optically correct, it just is a gradual blur, and for a true depth blur, you need 3D Information, which we can't get, and the next best thing is a depth map, in which case I am currently trying to get a correct algorithm to use with.
