Firstly, hi everyone! This is my first post on the FF forums.

At any rate, has anyone built a median filter? Even a 3x3 sample median filter? I know there's one in the FF2 beta, but I'm specifically curious as to whether or not such a filter has been built for FF1. I didn't see one in the "Snippets" section, and nothing came up when I searched for "median" in the published filters.
If anyone knows, please let me know. Thanks.

...and happy New Year. smile:)

fisholith, hi and welcome!

Regarding Median snippets / filters -- no, I haven't seen any, and I don't think that building a reasonably fast/accurate Median filter was possible in FF1.

i think there are some simplification filters, which is about as close as you're going to get to a true median filter in FF1. i dont recall any specific names, but check out any filters named 'comic', 'comix', 'simplify', 'simplification', and so on and i dont think that covers them all. sorry, i'm just bad with names. maybe someone else knows of some names that might come close.

you might also experiment with high pass and threshold components within the editor and see what you can come up with.
If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Thanks for the feed back Golovin and Kraellin. I appreciate the suggestions regarding simplification filters. I looked through some of them, but unfortunately none of them seem to actually be median-based. With respect to speed, I'm currently only interested in a 3x3 median, and it's not especially important how fast it is. The problem is that I specifically need the mathematical median result, as opposed to a filter that has a simplification sort of look.

It's okay if an FF1 median filter doesn't exist at the moment, I can always try and build one, but since I suspect that it may be a kind of tricky problem, I just figured that it would be a good idea to see if someone else had already figured out a solution. Though it sounds like no one has as of yet.

I'll go ahead and try to work out how to get a true median filter, and post my solution if I come up with one.
Thanks again Golovin and Kraellin. smile:)

Why don't you just code it up in any graphic environment that supports scripting, perhaps Processing or GIMP/GLuas? If the speed is not important, implementing a fixed-radius Median with no optimizations would be very easy.

Thanks for the GLuas suggestion. While I'm not sure I'll be able to use it for this FF1 median issue, I'd never heard of GLuas before, and it looks like you can do a lot of interesting stuff with it. I'll have to check it out. If there is a way to build your own Filter Forge modules using an external language, that might work.

The thing that makes it a bit tough is that I would like the median to run in FF1. I've given it a little thought, and I don't think it will be that hard (although I might be very wrong) to build a simple, but true, median using only Filter Forge 1 modules. Though the wiring may end up looking a little ugly. I'm probably going to start trying to build it in the next hour or so. Thanks again for the suggestion though.

- - Update 1:
I just built a median filter in FF1, which can be seen in my newer post here:

- - Update 2:
My FF1 "Median 3x3" filter and "Percentile 3x3" are now available in the Filters > Snippets section of the filter library.
