Does anyone remember Terrazzo from Xaos Tools?
I think I have finally found a near-replacement for it in Filter Forge! I LOVED Terrazzo. I'd been using it since 1997. But unfortunately I can no longer use it on my Intel-based Mac. I've been searching a long time to find something else that works. Neither Human Software's PhotoTessel (which I bought) nor Artlandia's Symmetry Shop (which I only demo'd) work with the speed and simpliity that Terrazzo did. Then I found Filter Forge! There are a couple filters that pretty much create tile patterns in the manner that Terrazzo did, namely "Unevening sfg" by stingerjpgr and "Kaleidoscope Background Maker" by Daniel Bruce. One thing I noticed, however, is that there are only 7 "modes", whereas Terrazzo had 17. (If you do a web search on "17 symmetry groups" you'll get a lot of info on these wallpaper groups). I was wondering if any of the talented filter makers here have tried to make more tiling groups? I tried to look at the filter editor in the free trial I'm testing, and I got hopelessly confused. So I'm hoping someone who is more adept at this might be able to create something? Or is it not possible? Thanks, Ellie |

Hello Ellie welcome to FF..
![]() Loved Xaos Tools..They had the coolest plug-ins......... Heres a link for those groups... http://www2.spsu.edu/math/tile/symm/types/index.htm ![]() Click on each image for more patterns within that group.. In those particular filters the creators have used the modes that are available to them...Heres a quote from the FF Wiki..
Heres the info about that component.... http://www.filterforge.com/more/help/...scope.html Stupid things happen to computers for stupid reasons at stupid times! |

So I guess there wouldn't be a way to get all 17 types in a Filter Forge Filter?

Oh there is always a way..
![]() ![]() Don't know if you have looked through the library or not...Might want to stroll through the pages......Might find something in there.. http://www.filterforge.com/filters/ca...page1.html http://www.filterforge.com/filters/ca...page1.html I have a couple of things going at the moment so eventually I might look into making one when I get a chance.... ![]() But now the ideal is out I am sure it will spark something.. ![]() ![]() Stupid things happen to computers for stupid reasons at stupid times! |

Yeah, I've spent hours poring through the libraries and keep coming up with the same 7 modes of pattern tiling.
Hope someone will give it a try...I'd love it if they do. |

New kaleidoscope patterns would be really cool. So far, I've only managed to replicate the Square mode without using the kaleidoscope component, but it has all the other controls included, with one extra (inverted shape size). The other modes are proving more difficult, and I don't understand at all those symmetry groups mentioned in the link. Here's what I have so far (you need the V2 Beta to open it):

Indigo Ray, I'd like to try it, but I can't get that link to work...I click on it and it opens up in my web browser. It just shows the raw xml code.

or right click on it and 'save target as' and browse to your 'my filters' folder and put it in there.
If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

One of the things that I wish Kaleidoscope Node had is:
X only symmetry (ie just mirror horizontally across axis) Y only symmetry (ie jusr mirror vertically across axis) You can do this using offsets, but it makes more sense being in Kaleidoscope. Also, if you want to repeat, like in Kaliedoscope, it's excessively complex to do with offsets. |
