Has anyone created—or considered creating—a filter that creates the same effect as this filter?

I made a filter which does something that looks somewhat similar, however only works at 45 degree intervals. It's up on my 'junkyard thread: *LINK*

Looks like this:

Thanks very much Rod_D for the filter link, it looks very close than the fractalius plugin for photoshop.

It is interesting and useful and I did not know that this was available, Great !!

ALSO this filter has the first 6 different preset that lets you get different levels of the effect and also gives different modification to the original image that is not possible in the original fractalius plugin

I decided to make a comparison on an plasma layer from Gimp.
Original image

Fractalius-Redfield

Fractalisious-Filter Forge

I included settings for each. smile:)

As you can see this Filter Forge filter comes very, very close with the proper settings.Kudos to the creator.

Here is the same image squared to 500x500 pixels after running redfields filter on it, then running fractal-tiling. smile:)
Then running fractalitious with those same settings.

It looks like the Redfield filter is doing more shape recognition somehow. The little strokes seem to fall in smoother angles. Maybe it just has more angles.

But yeah, the FF one makes a convincing 2nd.

btw: Redfield's filter 'Perfectum' is probably one of the most useful things in my toolbox.

Redfields filter takes "supposed" hidden fractal shading in the image and allows it to be seen.
I personally think that's a bunch of hokie.. lol
I think it is just a type of threshold or brightest edge finder that somehow inverts those edges to be more refined.Maybe some code in there to brighten edges up a bit?

But who knows Redfields deep dark secrets. smile:)

I agree Perfectum is another one i think i may purchase.Great anti-aliasing filter.

Here are the newest Fractalious 1-75 settings panels.Kind of why i kept 1.03 i like the settings in the earlier version better.Anyways i thought maybe this would give a sort of clue as to what exactly Redfield is doing to the image.

Rod_D here is a very good video that shows very well the conversion from the original photo to the Fractalius modified and is very good

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5fWRrG88ZU

I think that Probably Filter Forge could not make a copy of Fractalious as it uses a very well designed and specific algorith and is very well cared to show those effects, and although the FF filter is close enough is not the same.

Also there are lots of excellent Fractalius beauties all over the internet showing the lovely creations made with it

And thousands more in a google search in images part like this

I bet either some sort of Line Integral Convolution or creative FFT application is used.. both approaches are not really feasible constructing in FF without bitmap based scripting (which we may see in a future version smile:-) )
