Anyone interested in trying a beta of PlanetGen 3? I completely rebuilt it from scratch, much faster than the first two PlanetGens.

Cool. The actual beta has changed since I uploaded it here, but I'll try to get your rotation in sometime soon.
![]() EDIT: I posted that before looking at your version of PlanetGen. Looks like I need FF3 beta to open it. And as I intend on submitting PG3 to the filter library, that won't work. I might still add rotation, but it'll be done using Offset and Rotate nodes. |

Looks pretty good. Two areas could be improved: the look of the clouds and the general sphere shading. The clouds look too unnatural and the shading looks too linear (i.e. you can easily spot where it kicks in.. you don't have that realistic smooth shade look)

Shading looks really good now!
Not sure about the clouds - perhaps just too many and too massive.. |

Looks really sweet!
I do have two questions: 1) What does the coriolis control do exactly? 2) Isn't there a way to have the erosion in the filter and have it switched on/off? |

The coriolis control adjusts the intensity of the coriolis effect. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coriolis_effect
There is no erosion in the filter; it is probably a big part of what made PG1 and PG2 so slow. Maybe feeding a copy of the main terrain fractal into its roughness control will produce the same effect but faster. |

So the more coriolis the more hurricane look to the clouds?
And I noticed there's no erosion in this filter, that's why I asked if you could perhaps add it and put a switch on it for faster rendering if it's not needed ![]() |

No, more coriolis = more shear around the equator. It's a very simple approximation of the real coriolis effect. There's no way I can add erosion without making it ridiculously slow like PG2.
You might want to post further comments in the comments topic on PG3 as it has been out of beta for some time now. |
