can someone explain why the resulting blends are not black throughout the range of the input sliders? and why, when their inputs are ran through a tonecurve that does nothing, they turn black.

My best guess is that the precision of the internal calculations differ. Your last question is easy to answer - you look at the difference btwn the same source (nonsense) - of course you'll see black smile:-p

i wanted to show someone what was happening with contrast but after i hooking it up i was no longer sure i knew.

sorry about the nonsense. i was trying to undo the difference. here is what i intended
