Menger Sponge effect filter ? After making the nice sierpinski filter

I have seen the amazing and wonderful Sierpinski prism filter by Tim2501 and so after this I have thought that as this gets a very artistic and lovely effect, it could also be done another similar filter BUT this time with the MENGER SPONGE fractal shape.

To use the shape of a Menger Sponge but then use the base color of base image to fill whole colors of the small squares as can be seen here below

Although this example is not very good because it is randomly multicolored and not following a pattern based on an image, as it is based on rubik´s cube

Of course it would not be in 3D in FF, just in 2D.
