Why Origami?
1. Simple geometrics 2. Iconic images 3. Stylish 4. Attention-getting Why Tangram? Not your typical photo album page layout. See my website. I hope the accompanying images make sense. The user does not draw the shapes. The user merely goes to the preset and opens one of their images in one of the shapes drawn by the filter design entries which make up the butterfly image. In my "A butterfly" example, there are 8 predrawn shapes that can be filled with user images. ![]() |

WOW!! very nice and very good idea. Looks beautiful and interesting.
I think this could be probably done as it is not something complex (although I do ot really know from Filter forge filter creation point of view) Perhaps you could put more examples to explain better and in more detail how the filter could be done and what to have in it. |

Thanks for the feedback, SpaceRay.
See if the attached filter construction image makes more sense to you. I just upgraded to Basic Version 3 and do not know how to construct filters. I do however have some understanding of what filter creators are able to do with the new features in Version 3 Professional. This filter is "Paint by Number" in the sense that the butterfly outline has already been drawn by the filter creator and it is now up to the user to paint or color in the outline. The actual 'Paint by Number" products told the user what number colors to use and there was no way to paint with images, gradients, screen grabs, etc. The originality with a filter such as this is when the user chooses what specific images to use to paint or color in the shapes, how to modify those images and how to further modify the butterfly in some other graphics program once all the shapes have been filled in. I'll be happy to answer any other questions you or anyone else may have about the concept. Just let me know. I'm hoping someone will enjoy making such a filter. ![]() |

it would be a very smple filter to build [ but still requiring time which I don't have ] here is a basic start to a way of building it.
Note: just a very quick throw together of a shape as a method example quick way to get rid of background image [ without going to settings ] you'd probly want to have ability to offset the images with in the shapes anyway here is the simple method butter ex.ffxml |

Carl-
Thanks for taking the time to show me the basics of creating the Origami Butterfly filter. I hope my graphics and your coding inspire someone who does have the time and knowledge to create such a filter or other filter designs using the same fill-in-the-shapes concept. I chose a butterfly because butterfly designs are very popular and requires just a few simple shapes. Cats and dogs, also very popular, also require just a few simple shapes when drawn in the Origami style. I hope I didn't give you or anyone else the impression that I can create filters. I cannot. I just upgraded to Basic 3 which gives me all the utility I need for experimentation with my other software. I'm a user of tools, not a creator of tools. I enjoy experimenting to find new, creative ways of using tools that talented people such as you create. At present, I am experimenting with the use of Filter Forge filters for video titling/credits, image overlays of frames, animation overlays of frames, frame filtering for effects. That's why I am so keen on the png format. I need transparency capability: I frequently drag png files over many frames of a video timeline just as I do with audio loops. A person can also apply envelopes to png frames (fade them in and out) much as one does with audio fading. As soon as I am satisfied with what I am working on, I will post some videos on a suitable website showing what Filter Forge users can do with video software such as Sony Vegas and Serif Movie Plus using Filter Forge and transparent images. I need to make some zzzz's now. ![]() |

Thank you so much. I'm sure that I and other Filter Forge users will be able to put to good use any butterfly filter you design.
To show my admiration and appreciation of your prior efforts, I'm posting some example of how I've used several of your filters with a "found object". In this case, I photographed a VietNamese postage stamp with a USB microscope. I've also taken a stack of cancelled Italian bus and train tickets from my backpack, thrown them on the scanner bed and created a collage which I then subjected to your Artmatic filter. Mentioning these techniques in case others want to try some experiments using media other than digital. I have not said anything about Filter Forge to my dog and cat yet but eventally they will be filtered as well. I might however start off small by doing a scanned collage of different color/flavor dog biscuits or maybe throw some catnip on my flatbed scanner and then let my cat roll in it to create some feline performance artwork. ![]() |

I wouldn't change a thing, Carl. The filter is fantastic. I really like the clean, uncluttered, organized interface. It enabled me to work quickly and efficiently, not getting lost in a maze of settings. If I want to change the look of one or all of the images that I load into this filter, I will use one of your other filters to do it.
My worst fear is that someday, some overzealous filter creator will add one too many filter sliders to his or her creation and while testing the filter become distracted and accidentally redline either the Vertical Hocus or Azimuthal Pocus slider thereby unleashing an LCD screen-eating Filterzilla as it were. ![]() |

I have a few questions, please could you be more specific and give more details ![]() Please, what kind of horse you want ? What color do you want the horse to be ? I mean what of the many horses breed avaible ? What dress you want that the princess wear ? And which color and texture design ? Or you want her to be naked ? As said by Carl, which breed of frog did you want? On the right shoulder or the left shoulder should be the frog? How big you want the lollipop ? Do you want the lollipop in one color or must it be multicolored ? Who should be holding the lollipop, the frog or the princess? Supossing that would be the princess, you did not tell in which hand should be the princess holding the lollipop? |

The answers are:
Arabian horse. The color is up to the user (color control). A puffy ball dress. Color and texture are user controlled. Naked would be a good option. Add a checkbox Dressed\Nude. A Vietnamese Mossy Frog Either right or left, checkbox needed. Slider controlled lollipop size. Multicolored lollipop, user controls the colors. The frog holds the lollipop. Right leg if on left shoulder, and vice versa. You have 3 days. GO! ![]() |

Carl implored...
Is there a happy ending or do those pesky catfly destroy all chances of true love, or does my dead fish breath win Sophie over? None of the above Carl. The fact is that I don't know if the sweet, innocent Sophie could ever be comfortable with someone even tangentially involved in the Dark Filter Arts. I have seen your Grunge and Thrashed filters which disturbed me greatly. So much so, that I passed a long, sleepless night filled with 32 bit, True Color visions of the vulnerable Sophie being grunged and thrashed by some faceless, drawranged derelect. Seeing such heinous acts have almost been too much for me to bear. I really don't care what they do to junk mail but I really don't know if I can handle seeing what they do to helpless newspaper and cardboard today at the recycling center. But go I must. Ta, ta |

I want to thank to Carl that has made this great and well done filter where I have learnt two useful things, and is how to offset color control source if needed and add and order the controls under each color control, and how to make these shapes and then join them together.
Also thanks to opossum, because if this was not suggested it would not be possible to have it here. |
