How to...

After long time and many problems ( earthquake and tsunami not far from my house... then being in Bangkok while large part of the country was flooded... ), I'm back to my favorite program: Filter Forge.
But I forgot most of the things I learned before.
So, I'm here asking some basic hint.

Well, let's go to my question.
There are filters like Gridwarp or Fiber Image that apply a creative effect on the picture. The effect is not flat, but in 3D. It is also not only a play of light and shadow, it may completely change the color or the structure of the things in the photo, without changing their basic shape.

Let's suppose that I have a filter, like Unstable Weave, and I want to use it as a skin over my picture. This way my picture will keep the original shape, but the things in the photo will have the color and design of this filter wrapping them.
What is the best way to do it?

Do you have a specific example of the effect you are going for?
I find it hard to understand what it is exactly you are trying to do.

you mean where the picture is further away from the camera you want the filter to look "deeper" into the screen?

For the same reason it's not the best solution in most cases, it's almost impossible to recreate the effect that you're after automatically.

What you would have to do is Feed the filter 2 images - one is the original image, and the other is sort of a depth map, where darker is deeper.
Then you can use the depth map for the contour of the filter, and the original image for the colors.

But it probably depends filter by filter. The first photo is composed of very small pieces, and that helps.
