Just to give an impression, here's a 3D example.

Cool.

The only thing I find should be improved is the form of the clouds. They seem a bit too wispy at times. Otherwise great work!

I'm eager too see your spin-off filters on this. There are so many alien planets worth exploring... smile:D

Yes I know what you mean... in fact I'm already working on an update with better clouds but they're really hard to make.

Maybe I'll also put controls for colouring... maybe, I'm not sure yet: yellow sea, purple forest and green ice look a bit weird.
Other stuff in the update are better aphex seams and a greater desert range, it does get a bit slower though.
Too bad we can't code in ff, I've had to fake my way around seamless aphexes (in this case you'd need three or more dimensions for noise instead of two).

sjeiti,

actually, i've seen green ice and who's to say that some oceans arent yellow? i could well imagine a sulpher-laden ocean. if you're only thinking Earth-type planets, then no, dont change the coloring that much, but if you want a broader use for the filter, planets of diverse types, then i'd definitely add some color controls.

Looks awesome! ^_^

One thing I've always wondered about actually is if you can normally see cities these days on Earth from outer space... I guess it'd be pretty hard to do cities though since they're probably pretty subtle when looking from the windshield of a moving rocket ship.

I've totally rearanged everything: I threw in byRo's un-spherify and Uberzevs proportional gradient so the poles now hardly show any distortion. Only the filter now looks like crap on a 1x1 aspect ratio smile:-p (it should be used at 2x1).

This would look even cooler with a bump mapped sphere.
