The gem cut is not exactly realistic ( I work about gems cut. If you want to buy some, tell me. I can get good price for you. Ha! Ha! ) but the result is anyway nice.
I think this is the best gem filter of the whole library. smile:D

Thanks for the kind word. smile:D Trust me, I know the flaws. smile:cry: This is quick and dirty. I plan on doing another gem filter that actually simulates a beveling process instead of just using kaleidoscoped pyramid noise - that will even adjust transparency based on the bevels - as always, I want to get any filter that has potential market value out there to individuals and teams to work with, and with FF's exceptional upgrade system, I figure having it up beats having it perfect.

This community of filter developers, and FF itself, are very kind and generous to maintain the online free library, and this remix culture you have all developed around filters. Always consider my filters works in progress, and if you wish to take the rest of the settings from this and just redo the gem noise/cutting process for a remix, I would be honored to see you with your gemcutting experience you can outdo me. smile:pimp:

And if I manage to leverage my art one day into large piles of money, I will def talk to you about the real thing. smile:beer:

I wait to see your next gem filter!

( I add that it was a lot of time that I wanted to see something good on this field, and yours is the first that I like. I'm sure you can make even better ones ).

Thank you! smile:) I can and will! It'll probably be a week or so at least before I can dive into the kind of more complex filter tree I'll need for the "real" version of this, so I apologize for delays, but I'll keep it on my mind! #forgelife

I'm bumping this because I'm putting out a call for others to remix it and help me remix it smile:D

Also Ram, want to work with me on Gemology II?

I think it is probably necessary to choose some cut and to do a different filter for every cut.

Here you can see some basic ones :

The reason is that, as you can see, depending on the cut and the shape of the stone, the reflection of the light is different.
Other factors are possible intrusions and the transparency. The deepness can completely change the look too, but it may make the work too complex.

So, a possible idea could be :

1. Select the right image, as much frontal as possible.

Examples :

2. Load it in Filter Forge and use it as Image. Add it in a Multiblend to use as reference to build the gem structure.

3. It is probably possible to use Kaleidoscope, as you already smartly did. But I think it is necessary to create 2-3 variations to apply in different areas of the stone. For example, if you take the last picture, you would need to have at least two variations, one for the area at 90 degrees with your sight and another with the larger area with different inclination.

4. There is also the option to create it without using Kaleidoscope. This means create every single part using Free Polygons. It is a huge job, but it would re-create a perfect copy of the stone in the picture.

I have top facets! Nothing like the real cuts yet, but hopefully I'll be able to release GemII within a month. :> I'm going ham on this one! Real bottom faceting will hopefully be added, not just the faced kaleida reflections.

Sending true thanks across the planet to you for this help Ram. I feel like I may really get into this.

Well actually...I am going to co-develop this by taking up the real thing! You've inspired me. So it will be a bit before it's released, but hopefully it will be backed by real cut knowledge.

Those cut charts are amazing, I thank you so much for the info, where did you get them?
