Thanls all ! Glad that you appreciate this filter.
DJI, the best answer I can give you is to see the difference between the same image with and without this derivative component. That is why I use both images for the results in this filter. With derivative, the Rockies looks like more real, a better relief. You must experiment all math components to see how they work. It is so fantastic to use these nodes. OK let me show you examples of what I mean... images tlak more than words... The first example comes without derivative (Canyon 1 to Canyon 2 at 0 = this with the next filter as Landscape version Canyon) ![]() visit https://gisoft.ca |

Now you can see the difference by using derivative or not.

For the time being, I'll explain what I know.
The Derivative component (with ArcTangent) can provide you with a height map. It can be used for landscapes, shading, and most notably embossing. The Derivative component can also be used with the ArcTangent2 to determine the direction of "brush strokes" for the Bomber. The derivative that is computed in NOT in the proper range for use as a height map. The range you want is 0 to 1. To fix that, you take the result after the ArcTangent, multiply by 2, then add 0.5. See here for more on manageable derivatives, see this post. I agree that FF needs more documentation. I've found that PDF or HTML pages provide a better solution for documentation in the long run. Why? Videos are not easy to find things in, no index etc etc. I don't want to look through a 5 min video for one thing. And good documentation has a lot of detailed snap shots, another plus. Sorry, Ghislaine, stole your thread for a moment ![]() Math meets art meets psychedelia. |

DonT worry Rick, there is no problem. And yes, there is no or not enough informations for the use of each node and the connection between them with also examples. It is very regretable. I have to find things by myself since I create filters. I thank all members over here who have create some tuts and also snippets for help. DJI, I'm also visual and I understand better with images than words. That is why I put here examples for you and also for others users who have difficulties to understand the way of certain nodes. ![]() visit https://gisoft.ca |
