I'm just curious as to how this one's managed to get 236 downloads, have an update or two, and remain low usage. I have posted the cup & rose pics, using 3 presets as examples below the originals, just to show what it does to something besides the life preserver. Basically, I'd like to know why no one likes this filter ha-ha, and I'm not looking for praise, in fact, I'd rather someone told me why it sucks, why is it useless, so maybe I can fix it ha-ha. smile:D I realize this filter is not exactly thrilling or whatever, but as far as I can tell it's as good as half a dozen other average use filters much like it. I'm really, honestly wanting to know, why does this one suck, cause if I know why people dun like it, I will in fact, make changes to it, I promise ha-ha. Anyways, thanks for looking, and feel free to tell me why this filter sucks, no really, I'm asking ya to, in all seriousness. smile:)

Hi Jffe. I'll respond, but I have a couple of caveats:
1. I'm very new with FF, 2. I have not had much of a chance to use many filters yet given 1. The issues you raised with this filter bring to mind an issue I have with many filters that I think might be related, though I don't know. So you and everyone else should feel free to ignore any or all of this.

The filter effect is cool. I can imagine that the filter's design is complex and that considerable thought, creativity, and effort went into it. Given all that, I have a hard time imagining why I would want to use this filter to transform many of my pictures. Maybe it's just me, but this is a response I have to many of the filters I see. It almost seems to me sometimes that people create filters because they can or because they like the way the filter looks rather than for actual use with images. Obviously though, just because the effect is cool that does not mean anyone would want to transform one of their pictures with it. Very often, when I am looking at filters, I think "wow, that's cool, great, creative (fill in your own adjective if you like), but I can't imagine ever using it." That is exactly why I stopped making filters after my first. When I can think of a filter I would likely use, I will attempt to build it.

Maybe it's because I have no head for art creativity and that I almost always use filters to enhance some aspect of my photos rather than distort them greatly. Maybe others use FF very differently than I do. Again, I do not want to criticize anyone's filters or work. Just because I wouldn't use them that doesn't mean someone else might not. I download lots and lots of filters, even if I don't have an immediate use in mind, in part, because I have not done a lot of photo modification in the past and I want to experiment and try new things. So, maybe I'll use them someday too. In either case, I certainly admire what people have been able to create with the program.

I am happy to clarify my response or answer any questions you might have about anything I wrote. Please feel free to respond to me either here or with a private message. I welcome your response and thoughts.

Respectfully,
Ken

Ken, thanks for the feedback. So basically what you are saying is, there's a lot of very maybe cool, but *vague* filters (vague in that they don't do a normal simple photoshop type of everyday editing/color correcting/etc. function), and this falls smack dab within the uselesly cool genre then ? If so, I'm totally there with you, I find lots of the filters pretty useless for anything but blind luck experimenting, and maybe I should just consider that what this one is about and move on and not attempt to improve it. That is a possibility ha-ha, however, as random and artsy/pointless at this filter (and ones like it) kind of are, is there anything that could make it be more usable (while remaining in essence, some kind of kaleidescope effect) at all, or is it a lost cause ? Anyone else, feel free to yay or nay what Ken said, my intrepretation of it, or add your own different comments. There might be something to be learned here for anyone who participates in this discussion. smile:)

Jffe,

You are very welcome for the feedback. I hope it is/was helpful. From what you said, it sounds like you understood me perfectly. One thing that I might use some for are background and texture kinds of effects. In this case, if the cup could be recognized after it is filtered, it might be cool to filter it, set it as the background, then put the cup in front.

Aside from those kind of simpleminded uses, I just haven't gotten any farther in my thinking or experimenting. Hopefully, others will respond too and give their thoughts so we can see if I'm a standout mutant who thinks differently about this matter than everyone else.

Best of success and keep up the great work!

Let me start by say this is a cool filter - and I agree with the jist of what you guys are saying - there is some weird artsy filter that do get HU [ I have to wonder what the hell would anyone use them for { including some of my own } ] - so my point is the right type of artsy is going to be used [ the magic formula I definatly don't know ]the more radical surely the smaller the appeal group - while your alot safer doing an interesting photo enhancement filter if you want almost a guarrantee HU - I guess it get down to why do you make filters, to satisfy your creative needs, try and please the masses, feel happy that one person uses and enjoys your filter. The forum full of gurragling praise even though no one is actualy downloading or having any real use for some of the filters, all this criticsim about new people doing suboptimal filters regurgitated - who amongst us doesn't have a few dogs - there still a quota of filters from regulars that look very similar to dozens of other filter in the library no matter how much there talked up as unbelievable brillant etc

----Ha-ha, not yet, well none of mine, I've been keeping track smile:p

----It's not like I care that much, it just kinda struck me that I should pick one of my filters that has a lot of downloads (well, twice what some of my HU ones do at least) and one that has many comparabley mediocre look-a-likes (or one that is a mediocre look-a-like ha-ha) and use it as an example, to ask why some stuff even amongst the mediocre not-used-everyday-kinda-filters somehow climbs above and does get used a lot. And maybe you were right, it's just a majick combination of things, and there is no one single answer. smile;)
