thanks.. Whats cool about FF is that a lot of what I've learned over time from surfaceing in lightwave carries over very well. Setting up procedural textures is very much the same thing.

It works the other way too. I am taking what I learned at FF to my training in Maya.
Good luck with the filters I am sure you will do great things. smile:D

Probably a lot more components to choose from in maya.. smile:-) Learning is what its all about.. well that and having fun with it too.. Going to school for maya? I know lightwaves layout fairly well but am still grasping polygon modeling.. My modeler of choice is Rhino..

I wouldn't know about that but there is a bunch.

I wish, it's just seat-of-the-pants for me. It's going pretty well though. I have been using the tutorials bundled with PLE and what I find on the web - plus I have found a lot of answers on the renderosity, cgtalk and highend3d forums.

Btw, be sure to check out the snippets category for well though out methods for filter design - a lot of work has been put into the snippets. smile:)

Thats pretty much how I've learned what I know. I was looking through voldemorts filters and there are quite a few snippets in there..

He is not only one of the best but also most prolific. You will also find unpublished snippets in the threads of the 'Create Filters' forum. Plus there are two categories, texture and effect, just for snippets.

I even have one that will do this - but it takes too long too render.
This one is the scariest of all in my opinion.

Thank you StevieJ!
The blues and reds seem to glow. smile:loveff: But the second one is soo scary.

Do you think I maintained the clown look or should I call it something else? I think I should release it as a new filter rather than an update because the original has so many more curves than this one - plus it's faster; this one takes more than two minutes.

I think the clown thing is gone now smile;) smile:D

Personally, I would suggest doing a little more curve work and turn the form of the first two samples into faces.....by adding different eyes and mouths. The head shape and ears are already perfect smile:)

But I loved the scary clown. smile:(
Would you say it looks more devil or alien? I guess if I can give it buggier eyes I can turn it away from devil and towards alien.

I would do it to create all kinds of different faces.....from devils.....to evil clowns.....aliens.....transformers.......you name it......and I think people would definitely use it alot. It also wouldn't take much work to add head and ear shape controls on it smile;) smile:)

Hey, you have a new challenge here.....get lifetime upgrades, eh??? smile;) smile:)

I tried to do more with eyes and mouth control but it slowed it way down. Even as it is some of them take as much as three minutes to render. It may be too abstract to be useful but I never know what users are going to like so I'm going to submit it anyway.

i've been playing with this filter in the editor; obviously not the new stuff yet unpublished, but the original. you've got a lot of potential in this one and i love the new direction you've added. but, dont overlook some of the other possibilities here. going back to the original, you have a number of looks there that can be explored, shields, coat of arms, trophies, vases, various shapes, and more. the first part of the filter, up to and including the refraction, is where the potential is mostly. i've spent the last hour or so playing and gotten all sorts of interesting shapes out of this thing smile:)

Great ideas!!!

I still think that adding the eyes and mouth to the head and ear shaped variations would be very cool. I'm surprised that the curve work slowed the rendering down that much. My first guess would be where you put the curve work reletive to refraction. I think you could actually do this without refraction and use profile grads instead.....thereby doing away with the speed issues.....

Thanks Carl, Kraellin and StevieJ smile:)
Sorry I missed you Carl; I would not want to see a car sporting a grill like this running up on me in my rear view mirror. These would make some pretty intimidating avatars.
Kraellin I agree there are so many directions this could go; I had been dying to get back to this one ever since my trial expired so no surprise that this is where I picked up. The latest mods are clumsy and can certainly be tightened up later. Thanks for looking inside smile:D
Steve I wish I could have pulled off better eyes and mouths but don't count me out yet - I will come back to it when I have some better ideas and get better. smile:D

Thanks Carl. The version with the fancy colors takes more than a minute longer to render so I guess I will stick with the one I have online now. I got those amazing colors by accidentally plugging a duplicated section of the filter back into itself - crosstalk. smile:)

Hi Ron, I'm ok, my bones have been a real pain the last few days so I've just been resting. I think today I can actually do something in FF.

I'm getting ready to send my computers to the shop for cleaning and to get some RAM installed in about two weeks and need to burn everything off my drives first. I don't want to leave all my stuff on them for some kid in the shop to copy.

I am looking forward to trying this out.

I know what you mean about needing rest. Sometimes I get too tired to breath.

I don't think it will help in this case but I get my memory and graphics cards from Becky at this Ebay store:
http://stores.ebay.com/Memory-Labs

She was great when my graphics card failed. Memory for my main computer is $39/GB. I was able to install it myself but I don't think that is an option for you right now.

I hope that when you begin Maya you will ask me questions when you're getting started - it will help my consolidate what I have learned and I can tell you things I wish someone would have told me.

Take care.
