I suggest beginning by selecting 'New Image' and using a fill color of gray and the controls set as in this image:

Then with in the Lighting section set as in this image:


This will give a clean reflection to work with to begin varying the surface maps.

interesting idea. one could use this as a preview to various imported images to test how they might look under different surface conditions.
If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I never thought of that - good idea. I was thinking of it as a learning tool for noobs like myself. smile:)

well, it is. that's sort of what i was saying. noobs like us could preview images and learn how all this works. i think it's a great idea and would love to see some more 'demo' filters like this.
