some test renderings using Maxwell Render with this filter. I love it, but it could have some better controls for seamless patterns!

Realflow and Maxwell Render are programs made by NextLimit. It has been used in movies like “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” and “Sweeney Todd”"

I have only made some simple tests with the demoversion of Realflow:

ok, thanks. that name, Realflow, now makes more sense.

i'm still a bit confused on the difference between max render and say, maya. what's the difference between a 3d construction program like maya and a 'renderer' like maxwell render?

Maxwell Render is not for constructing 3d models - its just for creating photorealistic renderings. Most 3d-apps like Maya and 3D-studio have descent internal render engines, but they are not as good as the specialized render engines like Maxwell, VRay, Mental Ray, Brazil, Fry render and others.
