The texture is a little too noisy for my tastes (check the normal map!), but promising. I like the following variation most...

Really like this filter, now this is similar to what I had in mind for the Iron Man thing, but with curves that would be similar to parts of his suit...

Awh thanks was a pain to make, am still learning as I go. So there's probably a lot I could do to improve the filter when I know how. Probably look at it in a months time and think.. gosh! Why didn't I make it that way instead! Mind am only on my 15th day of filter building
![]() ![]() And I have about 15 different filter variations of this! Got to the point I couldn't remember which I liked the most the next day I opened FF.
I might have done the switch over wrong for the damage Crapadilla. I think all that noise on that map is for that. I set it so you can have it look like its scratched to a worn slightly rust kinda look. But am open for pointers ![]() Nothing wrong with a little insanity ;)

nice one. add a threshold and alpha set and you could easily make ring mail, too.
If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Ooo! Good plan.. we blame Carl
![]() ![]() But really I decided that how often does armour look like it's band new.. other than the day its been made. Well unless it never gets used that is! Plus I know how Crapadilla loves noise *coughs* ![]() ![]() Nothing wrong with a little insanity ;)

True, but there is a difference between a filter using noise and a surface being too noisy (which is often due to unnecessarily high 'Roughness' values). ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

I know I still have a lot to learn with the filter creating. Any suggestions which filters I should look at to figure out the correct method of applying noise? Rather than me using my normal method of trial and error?

Most real-world surfaces have what I'd call 'micro detail': subtle surface irregularities that result from material impurities, surface damage, weathering, etc. I always introduce this 'micro detail' into filters aiming at 'believability' because it helps breaking the 'hyper-cleanliness' inherent to most computer-graphics. Most of the time I use a zero-detail/roughness, zero-scale perlin noise blended over the final heightmap by a very small amount (say 0,01 to 0,1) to break up highlights and roughen up reflections. Check Fried Egg, Decadent Drapery or Lounge Lizards for subtle examples. Note how the normal maps of these filters do NOT appear noisy overall. --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Thank you Crapadilla!
Will have a look at them after I have eaten. Already had the lounge lizards one downloaded.. Had to download the other two, got to the eggs and realised how hungry I was! ![]() ![]() Anyway will have a look at them and see if I can tweak the scale without changing the output to much. You're welcome.
I get the feeling I might have to write a DO's and DONT's wiki entry for this 'Micro-Detail' topic. ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

I should spend more time reading the current Do's and Dont's, part from I start reading and want to start making. Bad me, being that if I did read through and learn the do's and dont's rather than play at making filters I probably would have made some well wicked ones by now, minus the dont's.

I finally got around to checking this one out and I found a glitch with it (seemed to happen when I checked the bottom 2 boxes at once, before that it was fine) see the screencap below. (Probably a simple fix, just though you'd want to correct it and resubmit is all.)

Hi Jffe will have a look at that glitch, thanks for pointing it out, doesn't really surprise me though cause was in my first few weeks of using FF that I made that filter.
