Preset size is maximized for the close-up life preserver.....so adjust "size, Pixels" in combination with the "Diffusion" control for the desired amount of effect to your image......

ok, had a play with the filter and looked at the guts. this one has a range from water color to a sort of motion-streak blur to even a bit of a through glass look. and typical of steve's filters, the guts are deceptively simple. the only thing i would leave out is the hue shift (color shifter). that's not really the focus of the filter. not hurting anything by being there, i suppose, but seemed superfluous to the nature of the filter.

i tried it on lynn's recent swamp picture, so i wont post the results not having permimssion to use that photo, but i liked the results.

i also found it interesting that you ran the blur through the threshold node of the threshold component. nice trick smile:)

Yeah, I'm kinda doing a little bit of what you are doing......tring to combine some artistic features with it so I don't have to submit multiple filters......and have the FF villagers chasing me with torches and pitchforks smile;) smile:D LOL.....

As a compromise, I've made the lead preset in the original image color.....

Ah, you caught that one.....I like that method because it thresholds subtle levels of blur on the image.....which I created and used in all of my "SoftLens" series filters......

as far as i know, yes, it's lynn's. nice pic.

and yes, the blur in the threshold looked interesting. might have to experiment with that a bit.

Lynn is very nice about allowing her pics to be used.....so I'm sure she would let you use it if you ask her.....nicely smile;) smile:) LOL....

Take a peek at how I use it and expound upon it in my "SoftLens" filter series.....you can use any one of them as snippets.....and different "soft" effects can be created on the original image and/or effects just by where you put it in the tree.....

steve, i've been playing around inside your filter. you may have just given me one of the best ideas i've ever had for an art filter smile:!:

also, i take back what i said about removing the color shift. leave it in!!

here's an example of what i did.

well, i find myself playing with your filters a lot. they inspire me quite often. and when i saw your brush strokes in this one, i just kept thinking about various effects folks try to achieve in the photo art section of retouchpro. and i've been trying to simulate some of that in FF for a while. i wanted multi-directional strokes or, something impressionist. i think this hits the latter.

If you haven't already done it.....you can use different noise for different brush strokes.....refraction for some cool enhancements.....and put it on a surface result for reliefs.....all kinds of neat little artistic touches.....

As do yours with me......especially with your noise work lately smile:devil:

PS..... You are the one responsible (or to blame smile:D ) for getting me going on all those overlay glass filters smile;) smile:)

yeah, i've tried using noise for brush strokes before and was never happy with it. it's ok for seeding the brush, but not really for the final look. refraction, yes. that can help. but it's the noise distortion that really has the potential and that's what i've been playing with in yours.

as for going surface, not yet, i think. i put in a foreground sharpen, background blur routine for the depth instead of going surface. that routine wont always work, though, so i might change to surface down the road.

well, dilla is responsible for the recent noise work, so i credit him smile:)

and as for the last point, it wasnt me, i wasnt there that day; the devil made me do it; i blame it on carl; nobody informed me; there wasnt any time; the mailman was late; i blame it on carl; the dog ate it; must have been someone that looked like me; i'm barely responsible for my condition, how could i be responsible for yours; carl made me do it; god was whispering in my ear; and yes, i have liability insurance. smile:D

LMAO .....it was an earthquake, tidal wave, locusts.... smile:dgrin: ("Blues Brothers".....Belushi in the sewer with Carrie Fisher smile:D )

You can get the brushstrokes by setting up different blends using noise (image plugged into background) with the noise distortion.....takes some experimentaion, but it's there.....

Belushi in the sewer with Carrie Fisher
classic smile:)

well, that image i posted is sort of a dapple brush effect. and yes, i've played with a number of components and arranagements thereof to get good brush strokes of different kinds, but i've never really been happy with too many of them. so, that dapple effect i kind of like and gives me some new ideas.
