StevieJ,

I really like this one. I find the effects interesting for some of my projects and it has inspired me to try some new (personal) photo experiments with FF...

I made this series to use on family pics for Christmas.....so I thought that others might find them useful for the holidays as well. I would be interested to see what you come up with smile:devil: smile:)

i like this, steve. one suggestion, though. add your color shifter (hue/sat) slider to this. i know you've got that first control for changing things, but an extra hue/sat type here would allow just a bit more tweaking.

here's the default used on that poor woman i used in the monter pics smile:)

As far as image projects (with your filter) go, it would be too embarrassing to show them. (I don't consider myself a serious artist -- I just do it for therapeutic purposes. smile:) )

But as far as inspiring me on creating other filters, I'll attach what I came up with below.
I was just experimenting, and I did get lost in a lot of tangents... It's just a (very) rough exploration -- I'd have to really trim it up for it to be more user friendly, but the few presets give some general ideas of where I might explore more...
The inspiration from your filter was to experiment with masks with blur effects. (I still never got around to adding a Frame component for a vignette blur effect -- but I've been intending to explore into that area more too...)

In any case, the results may not be too entertaining to you -- but it was some time-killing fun for me. smile:)

I don't think it can be done because the color shifter would completely change the picker color.....but I will test it out and see if there isn't something I can do there smile;) smile:)

Your WIP looks good so far......and I never thought of using a mask smile:devil:

I was just eye-balling your Aether Dream filter (love the colorations)......and I was wondering if you wouldn't mind if "borrowed" a portion of it, reworked it, and incorporated it into this type of effect.....with full credit and cudos of course smile;) smile:)

Hey, no problem if you take any ideas from Aether Dream.
That filter was a pathetic attempt to recreate something similar I noticed to a Flaming Pear filter called "Aetherize". (If you google it, the "aetherize" filter may show up under Flaming Pear's sub category of Products -> Designer Sextect...)

As far as any credit goes, it maybe should go to Flaming Pear... where I admit their "Aetherize" filter was what inspired me to create Aether Dream. (I guess I should have mentioned them in my filter description, but I thought my attempt was so pathetic/incorrect that they wouldn't care, and also with my "Aether" title I tried to make a tribute to them (for those that knew of that filter/plugin).)

Carl,

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not sure which direction I'll take that filter now (as I haven't slept for a few days) -- but if anything does turn out, I'll be sure to blame StevieJ for it. smile:)

steve, i've been playing with the internals on this one. lots of possibilities here! and i dont mean as far as re-doing this one. i think you've got the right range on this one. but, other effects, borrowing off this one... some interesting things that can be done.

oh, and as far as my color shifting idea on the original here, i simply added a 'hue' control to that last hue/sat component and re-mapped it quite tightly on the min and max sides such that it only goes through the reds and yellows. i think that might stay consistent with the current filter and give a tiny bit more control. that's all i was really talking about. i think the re-mapping was something like minus 27.6 to plus 27.6 or something along those lines.

I know.....this was the "base unit" smile;) smile:D The others employ more elaborate blend scemes and different types of blur/haze effects.....but I wanted to see how this one would be "received" before dumping.....errr.....submitting any more of them smile:D

Hey ssamm - I think you are the most naturally gifted artist at all of Filter Forge. I'm not saying you’re a master technician like byRo or uberzev, or a master craftsman like Crapadilla or Constantin Malkov, but if you would relax and allow yourself to play - you are capable of making the most beautiful filters that FF will ever know. smile:)

Well, can you send it to me via email??? I don't want anything to detract from the usage on this one just yet smile;) smile:)

If you discovered some cool things to incorporate into this one, I'll gladly give you full credit and cudos for it......or if it is completely different than mine, then I would say to go ahead and submit it yourself smile:)

PS.... All three of these 'DreamScape' filters in the recent submissions have been updated with a combined frame and threshold blur vignette that can go much heavier and tighter on the image. I also added a guassian toggle which creates some neat things using the regular blur.....

I'm thinking about adding directional blurs to this......as well as glass vignettes smile:devil:

mostly it's just adding some controls, though i did add a couple components here and there. so, i guess i wont post it here, since i wouldnt be comfortable submitting as my own on it yet. but, i do like the general layout and progression of what you've got and may borrow on that for something of my own.

and the hue/sat i was talking about is the last component before the result component. just add a hue slider in there and re-map it tightly so that you only run through the red and yellow range.

rather than send you the filter, at the moment, let me post something to give you the idea of what i'm doing with it. the general idea is one of focusing by blurring. sounds odd, but by making a background more blurry, you can often make the foreground more focused without any sharpening of the foreground. it's an old trick and you probably are already familiar with it, but your filter technique just really lends itself well to this idea.

Brilliant minds think alike smile;) smile:D The versions that I submitted last night (now in the Recent Submissions) does this.....by clicking off the gaussian and turning down the Threshold Blur controls.....

I also have a few more filters to submit that expand upon this concept.....

Very glad to have your 'seal of approval' on these smile:) smile:) smile:)

well, i think it's cool as hell, so, yeah, you get the 'cool as hell' seal of approval... and so do i for the mods smile;) smile:D

that last one, i added a high pass up with your channel components and two sliders for it. but i really shld have doubled the image size to show it off right. looks a bit blurry at this size.

yup, dunno about tone separation, but definitely toning with blur. and by using the blur, the transitions are perfect.

and if you really want to get some depth, like this next picture, you can add a switch to your invert. these are often good when using them as layers with blend modes in photoshop, to get some interesting effects.

and this one really shows off the toning by blend mode and blur. this is somewhat extreme. there are a lot more subtle ones, but i wanted to show the effect.

also, there is one 'bug' with your filter i shld point out. by using a 'noisy' gradient on the frame stuff, you do get some noisy effects where they may not be wanted. if you could use a smoother, clean gradient, it might be better. or maybe offer it under a switch. this pic shld show what i mean. notice the hair edges and eyebrows. this is from one of your presets and not something i modded in.

Actually, I got the idea from CF's "Mystic Blur" filter.....that I was using for some portraitures. I modified part of CF's basic vignette concept.....took out some unecessary components......swapped out cells for perlin for a better noise spread at minimum scale.....and combined frame and threshold for better depth, seemless transition, and range.....

ah, ok.

well, here's two more things i did with the filter. i added a black and white capability and a 'hard' vignette. now, i can take that hardness down and transition it, but wanted to show the 'hard' part.

I just tried a gradient profile setup and it doesn't seem to work. So far, it seems that a noise component is the only thing that will allow a smooth transition to minimize and remove the vignette to the outer edges with the 'Threshold Blur' control.....

BTW..... I think that I remedied the bug in the new version by combining the first frame component margins with threshold on the "Threshold Blur" control. It adds a very subtle second blur layer that seems to cover it......
