It was for a long time. At the last minute I changed it. smile:cry:
I am trying to stop updating so it is very annoying to have to say this, but I have already submitted an update. smile:evil: I noticed after it posted a very easy and effective way to tie the strands together giving it more loft and contrast - it only requires the addition of a threshold component. It even made it a little faster. smile:?:
Here is the new lead preset from the updated filter.

What do you think of the new lead? Think I should go with var 1?
Here is var 1 from the update:

This filter only took 2 and a half hours, start to finish. I guess that's because it is a simplified variation of the previous three I have submitted. Mostly it just involved unplugging components - I guess sometimes you just get freebies. smile:|
I have spent more time hand wringing over getting the update posted than I did making the filter. I wish the submission/update process was faster. My personality type does not lend itself to a moderated update system. smile:hammer:

Another great one!! smile:loveff: I definatly think we should have more weave filters. They are always fun to play with and very useful. Thank you!

The update has posted. As always you will need to force a browser reload to see the gallery thumbnails and be sure to delete the local copy of the filter before downloading the new one. Btw, Craig, I just checked this and it is true – at least on my computer.
Thanks for the comments and taking the time to look at it. smile:) Suggestions or special requests always welcome. smile:)

hi ron,

yes, i checked it on my computer, as well. seems you were right. i had always thought they auto-updated when you downloaded the new. and since you can download the new while still having the old, what the heck is happening to the new if you havent removed the old? is it still there in the folder somewhere or did it really not download because it saw the old on your computer. i mean, where did it go? smile;)

Too bad, I was hoping it was a problem unique to my configuration. There is probably a significant number of users that assume they are working with the current version, when they are not.
I cannot think of a situation where it is preferable to assume the local copy should take precedence. smile:?: At least we should be prompted to decide or notified about the result.

yes, a prompt to overwrite would be great!

frankly, my preference would be to save the different versions and not allow overwrites at all. i know that would make the library itself more cumbersome, but i like saving all versions, even they arent of my making.

An update has posted that give the filter an optional staggered weave look.

I also added a slider range tweak that greatly improves the variations outcomes. This is now the most reliable filter I have ever made. smile8)

As always, be sure to delete your local copy before downloading the update.

I really like that last preset! Ya know, if the vertical stripes had the same effect that the diagonal ones have, it would look like a satin weave.

Now I want them the same. smile:evil:
If I can get them to match up I will post an update. From just playing around with if for a few minutes it may not be possible.
Thank you for the suggestion. smile:)

I got this far but I had to add three controls and demolish all symmetry within the filter – and it is still not very good. smile:( I'm not giving up but it may never be silk.

Thanks Craig. I just tried running the shape through the noise before cutting it up then rotating it back to 45 degrees. But that did not work either. For some reason, perlin at 90 does not want to behave like perlin at 135 degrees. smile:?:

I got rid of two more nodes. It's probably fast enough that I could make it a surface and try to sell the effect with lighting. smile:|

What do you think of this one? I was able to keep the internal symmetry and the same controls. It renders in about a minute.

The surface one was going to trigger a hole new round of tweaking and I do not have time to do that right now - plus it really slowed it down.
Here is one with the weave tightened up and the roughness increased in vertical.

I don't like the surface filter as much, I think the simple filter looks more realistic. smile:)

Well, come to think of it, I don't either.
The good news is, to get the bump map for the surface, I moved the noise processing to the end of the chain – something I should have been doing all along. It is now about 25% faster as a simple. It also allows me to leave the bump map components orphaned in the filter so users will have easy access if they need that map to work with.
Here it is configured with ten presets. Does anyone have an opinion which one should be used as the lead?

Woops,here is the correct one.

What about making it a surface for 'lighting' it as a simple – just land some light on it. It does not speed it up much and gives the user much more control.

The first preset you already have! smile:) And in the "Cross WeaveGenie h" you have some cool presets that don´t appear in "Cross Weave_w a" - presets 5 and 6.

Yep. I´d go with the simple filter as well and keep the bump map orphaned.

I agree completely. I sort-of like the idea of using the hdri environment as a brightness/cast control, but I think with a large scale perlin plugged in to the height channel and a viable looking map orphaned, it may throw too many people off.
Thanks smile:)

the trick with having a surface filter look like a simple filter, is to turn down the height under the lighting tab. that way you still get some of the hdri environments.

Good stuff ronviers..What I do and if you look at my HDRI filter is instead of plugging a height map into the height on the result component plug the profile grad into the height instead..Make sure its colors are black..You get zero height and still
get to use enviorments also...Of course the height control no longer works and its not used by randomizing but just a thought.. smile:)

Thank you CFandM. That's a good idea. I have been doing something similar with my Add Atmosphere filter but instead of using black I multiply orthogonal gradients, which causes the environment sphere to land evenly (somewhat) on the image plane. I found an effect that is faster but more distorted using this method:

The problem I have with adding the effect to a texture is that it will be confusing - even misleading - for anyone that does not read the description. My guess is that only about 15% of the users read the descriptions - even fewer read the comments.

I think your method would be best in this case but I still think it would be confusing. It would be a texture with an orphaned bump map and what would appear to be a nonsensical height map. smile:|

I don't know. I just tried it using the black gradient and it works so well that I do not see how I can not release it that way.
