Hey Foxxee if you get a chance look in on the birth of orb thread to see the one I did with an alien fetus inside it - creepy.

As is pointed out downloads are irrelevant - Steve got one at 24 - I had one at 46 or something and one at 220 - so to think that once they reach some magic number or page that they are going to Hu is miss guided smile;)

Anyone can do that kind of art. Just a matter of learning the program and buying models to plop in the scene.

I just finished the introduction to texture mapping and I am just starting the section on rendering - textures and rendering are my favorite. No surprise there after FF. Maya uses, besides its own built-in render engine, something called mental ray. It offers caustics, subsurface scattering and ambient occlusion. These effects taken together with global illumination can create an unbelievably believable scene – not just real but hyper-real. This would be like that once a year lighting you get for thirty minutes on one day - like Yellowstone in full colors after a rain. Imagine making a whole movie in perfect lighting. I know, I’m rambling, but it really is amazing what mental ray can do. I don't know when mental ray was integrated into Maya but it was a big big deal.

Definitely – I can hardly wait to get started. In fact I had an idea last night that might be pretty cool. Unfortunately I have other things I need to work on first.
I did manage to get most everything going again hardware wise. I don't like moving or opening my computer but because of the bad graphics card I had to three times, memory – two times, hard drive – two times. Now, after all that, the DVD has stopped ejecting. I probably knocked off a cable or something with all that screwing around. I use the DVD for burning archives and I am not making anything to archive right now so I will ignore it for as long as possible.
Back to work. I'm trying to figure out what the exact differences are between a shader, a material, a shading algorithm, a shading node, a shading material, a material definition, a shading node with attributes and maps, a shading group and shading network. smile:?:

Much of the confusion stems from my system of keeping two sets of notes; one for industry jargon and another for Maya terminology. Apparently I might as well call shaders, materials and shading materials, synonyms in the context of the broader 3D community. I figure that once I get the idea of how Maya handles the nodes, attributes, groups, and networks I will be able to follow what people are talking about in any case. smile:)

i dont know if this will help in maya terminology or not, but in some apps, 'shaders' are textures with code. like, you make a texture and embed a code within it to do something, like reflect light more than normal or something similar. but, that may not be the case with maya, so, LOOK IT UP! cant play the tune if you dont know the words!!!

In Maya; as soon as a texture is attached to the attribute of a material it becomes a shading network - which sounds extremely close to what you just said.

Yes, I was very careful about that. To get the previous orbs set the Style slider to color dodge and the Color Depth slider to 50 and they will be identical.
Thanks for checking it out. smile:)

Who's not talking? I'm talking. I have just been sulking. smile:) I noticed during the sign up process for the ff forums that ticking the ‘act like a big baby’ option disabled the ‘throw a tantrum’ and ‘maintain universal respect’ options but I decided to do it anyway – I’m not the tantrum type.

I wouldn't call the modifications improvements as much as change for the sake of change. I was decompressing with a little ff-ing and started to play around with the tiles component. I had always thought of tiles, in fact the whole 'pattern' category, as gimmicky but tiles at least can be very useful. I think I blew it on the lead preset but I was in a hurry to wrap things up. I will resubmit it one day with a better one.

I'm concerned about your concern for Matt Serra's arse. What about it specifically has you so worried? Is it the broader fleshy parts of his arse or are you talking rectal area? Don't tell me it's the pucker – I don't even want to go there. We have to find a way to get your mind off his arse. Maybe you could try loading up 'The Orb' and hitting variations – that will help take your mind off of it. smile:D
