ok, when i say 'burn a cd', i mean burn TO a cd, not rip something off it. can you copy information from your harddrive ONTO a cd?

Tried both didn't work either way

reloaded drivers and did a new hardware install.....

The other problem may be that XP DVD drives don't read all UDF (Universal Disc Format) for CDs......and will show the drive to be empty.....

All in all, I would have to agree with you.....the easiest way is to take the computer to where you bought it and say "What the frick?!?!"

Hey, it would be dirt cheap to have that fixed at your corner computer shop.....but watch out for those shady guys who might try to soak you by saying there is more wrong than there really is.....

Hi Carl,
I don't like disassembling or moving my computer and I certainly don't like someone else touching it. smile:evil: You might consider something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/LG-16x8x4-DVD-RW-...dZViewItem

It's cheap, external and reads/writes both CDs and DVDs.

Even if it turns out your existing drive is still functional something like this could still be used on your next system or even to move files from one to another.

Good luck

Oh, I wanted to add that I have no idea about the viability of that particular ebay reseller - it is just one I found at random that did what I was looking for at a reasonable cost that shipped worldwide. You will probably be able to find a more suitable supplier.

going on what steve said, you could uninstall the drivers, physically remove the drive, boot up windows again, do a registry cleaning, power down the system again, install the hardware and let windows find the hardware and install new drivers. that shld work if the hardware is ok. just one question in that regard. did you install any software besides drivers, for using the cd/dvd drive? i know Nero 7 (or some other version) comes packaged with a lot of burners these days. if that software had gotten corrupted, that could be it too. so, you'd want to uninstall that software also, along with the drivers. and when you booted up again to let windows find the drivers and install them, you'd then install the other software as well. that shld ensure a clean install of all things related.

the only other thing i could see having an effect on this would be windows media player. if that were corrupted and you're using that for ripping music, that could possibly be screwing things up. and since it was vista that you aborted, and that vista and windows media player are both M$ products, i suppose the vista abort could have reset something in windows media player.

so, do you have additional software for burning cd's/dvd's? and does this software seem to function ok, with the exception of the cd problem?

does windows media player work ok?

it would still be a lot easier if you had a spare drive to test with. and i'd also recommend not taking it to a shop. the basic shop fees these days are something like $80 and hour with a one hour mandatory fee. a new drive would probably cost less than that. so, if you take it to a shop and pay $80 just to have them tell you it's the drive, you could have already bought a new drive for that much.

That's pretty much how I do it.....sorry I wasn't more descriptive. You can also reload your operating system.....but we all know how much of a nightmare that can be......loosing things and having to reset everything.....

Good advice smile:)

Look like it going to be awhile before I can do anything, the water pipe under the drive burst and Ive found out the builder of the house used irrigation pipe instead of water pipe which is reached the age where splitting will regularly happen - so the plumber has quoted me $3000 to put a new pipe from the meter to the house [ I'm on an acre ] so I'm going to have to get a loan and pay that off smile:cry: smile:cry: smile:cry:

No.....but that's why I was vague about it......I didn't want you to try re-installing your operating system.....things can go horibly wrong and loose things if you are not careful. I would strongly suggest taking it to your local computer geek......because it just might be how you have your hardware settings.....and shouldn't cost much at all for someone to at least take a quick peek to diagnose the problem......

Sorry about the confusion on this one......I removed "oils" from the name because I added the matte relief effects to this one. I wish FF would update filter names in the comments string......would be nice.

I didn't use any blur in this one......I used a combination of noise details, lighting height, and sharpness to emulate blur. Simple to most.....but I thought it was kinda clever how I worked it out smile;) smile:D LOL....

I like it. There is just something about that photo that enables it to take a filter. I find for effects it works better than the lifesaver.
Thanks Steve

Your welcome smile:) Check out the 'squared' separation in the sky area.....that shows that your image is close to detail depletion in those areas. My 'cup' pic does the same thing.....but is excellent to use as a test pic to see how the filter will deal with depleted areas......

I have much higher resolution versions if you want try one. I'm not sure of the attachment restrictions at FF so I set this at 100k.

I misspoke I should have said that I have much lower compression versions. Although I do have it in hi res it is probably jpg artifacting causing the problems.
Anyway I'm going to have to lie down - have a good one.

Steve - is this your first surface filter? I think it is one of the best effects filters at FF.

Yeah, I do too smile:) It kinda gave me an idea to do an old cracked oil painting filter using the tight fine reflections as the exposed white in the cracks.....
