I have searched the library and tried multiple paint/brushstroke FF filters but can't seem to find one that creates a really visual brush stroke like I used to get with PaintShop Pro's "Virtual Painter". Is there a FF filter that can do something like this...

I got something similar. It doesn´t have any fancy controls tho.

It´s not in the library, just click on the attached ffxml file. smile:-)

Edit: If it doesn´t open in FF automatically, move it to your my filters folder. (Users/ YourNAme/AppData/Roaming/FilterForge 3/MyFilters on windows)

Oh... well that explains why I didn't find it. smile:)

That makes me wonder how many other great filters are in existence but not available in the library. smile:(
I'm new to Filter Forge (just bought it a couple months ago) so am just learning.

Thank you so much for making the filter available here. I think it's the closest I'll get to what I am looking for and even without the controls you spoke of, I'm sure I'll get some fantastic results.

Please do, Skybase!

I just tried out Sharandra's and it looks really nice. She's (?) right though, there are very few controls.

Would it be difficult to get the filter to follow the lines of the image instead of just all strokes generally going horizontal. What I mean is... if I have a photo where the subject is vertical but the background flows more horizontally, can the filter be made so that it is smart enough to place the paint strokes on the subject in a more vertical fashion and still keep the strokes on the rest of the scene flowing horzontally?

(Hope I explained that understandably)

As I mentioned, I'm new to FF so my expectations/hopes may be way too high and out of the realm of possibility.

Glad I could help. Here is a version with an optional frame. Btw, you can use the size slider for smaller brushstrokes.

We all got our secret treasures! smile:p
Maybe I´ll tweak it a bit and submit it sometime.

Yay! smile:ff: smile:p Wasn´t hard tho, as I already had it. It was an experiment I did a while ago. Originally it was just plaster/paint on a wall smile:-)
And I´m curious with what you came up with, so yeah post it! smile:D

With a different approach that should be possible. Something like the Van Gogh Flow Filter.
Let´s see what Skybase did.

Added in an Angle control, so you can change the angle of some brushstrokes.

Same version but it needs a selection. you can change the brushstroke angle on the selected part.

It´s really tricky to let FF know the direction of objects in an image.

So I reopened that filter project after a couple days of inactivity! Didn't forget... just the problem is that... well now it looks totally different from the picture that was posted as reference. heh. This is what I get for working at 4 am in the morning.

I'm going to add some controls and post it here. The filter was made in version 4.0 beta, so umm... if you have 3.0 smile:( Filter does render in approx. 32 seconds without anti-alias. Visually, the filter really doesn't need it. There are quite a load of heavy details and 1 bomber that produces the overall effect. Pretty sure I can knock out more nodes though or least add a preview mode for people who just can't wait smile:)

The preview scale is mildly biased so I'm adding an option that'll make the filter output scaled properly so it visually appears the way the filter's been imagined. Although this feature may come in later! smile:D

Well I adjusted things a bit further... and made it into a surface filter and suddenly it takes longer. smile:p This one took 1 minute to render this tiny scale. Seems like it can be just a simple surface filter though.

I need to add options still... kinda sucks having a filter with 1 slider and 3 check boxes.

Rats... guess I won't be able to use it then. I just bought version 3 and have no intentions of upgrading at this point. Too bad because it's looking good and with more tweaks, it'll be a winner.

Well... I can always downgrade it by remaking it in FilterForge 3.0 smile:)

At this point the base material's pretty much done and it's a relatively simple filter. Just the numbers have to be the same which shouldn't be hard to re-make smile:)

OMG... that would be awesome! I'm sure there are other folks out there that don't have FF4 and would also appreciate this in an FF3 compatible version.

THANKS, Skybase! You are SUPER!

Been a while... so I was working behind the scenes... quietly just reconstructing the filter from scratch. My daily life is ... pretty awful already smile:( so it took me longer than I thought.

Either way I'll submit this to the library with final touches but I thought I'd first put it here anyway. smile:) We can make more adjustments to the filter too.

Current render times hang around 32 seconds without the anti aliasing and it looks perfectly fine without it. smile:)

Enjoy!

Yes, I noticed that it finally appeared. I went ahead and downloaded that one and will try it out. I will watch for the update.

Thank you so very much for creating this filter. It appears to be very close to what I was looking for. smile:)
