Think it needs one more push in terms of design.
Something like having a slider allowing the user to distort the image based on the texture would add even more.
Bonus points if you simulate ambient occlusion without using ambient occlusion.

smile:) Think this will keep things moving here.

And Skybase. Your suggestions seem a bit vague to me. Ambient occlusion without ambient occlusion.smile:?: All I can think of is contrast. And distorting the image basd on the texture. I've already included a variation slider. Maybe you could clarify?

Oh yes all the technical stuff.

I guess I'll just mod what you got so far and explain through there.

I just figure I'd start setting examples of what can be really pushed. Lately FF seems lacking of a new Editor's pick lol smile:)

Yeah right, all that "Technical Stuff." Ya know dude. It's wonderful that you want to push the envelope but for me it would be really great and far more helpful that when you make a suggsetion you include an explanation which (gee I don't know) actually explains what your talking about. Seriously, if you want to modify this filter be my guest. I would just like people to tell me what there talking about when thay say things like "Simulate ambient occlusion without using ambient occlusion." smile:?: I have no idea what that could possibly mean.

Since there was a ton of stuff I wanted to talk about I thought I'd clarify all that through a video! So you can kinda consider this a mini video tutorial, but more like a suggestion of ideas. I also attached the modded filter.

Hopefully this clarifies what I meant! smile:)

First of all I honestly don't know what the big complicated deal was. All you had to do was to tell me that you thought that adding a High Pass component & a refraction component would improve my filter. Then I could have tried it and told you that that's not what I had in mind. Also you should have tried my filter out on a number of images and you could have seen that the background and foreground work together just fine. Seriously man you should check this stuff out before you jump in with suggestions. Anyway i'll keep your idea in mind for other filters. And thanx for giving it your best shot. smile:D

Yes, but like many things in graphics programs things are variable. The way you build something changes the way you approach a problem. Which is why I'm vague on that on purpose to avoid the sort of confrontation of me directly intervening with your process since I don't know your intent. However, this time, I've gone too vague and too technical at the same time. I was thinking that those key words "distortion" and "ambient occlusion" would conceive additional ideas but I figured later that it simply just didn't cut it.

The thing is I typically talk like that amongst others so I guess I'm just too used to it. People typically pick those cues up.

I should have mentioned that I discussed "simulating ambient occlusion" on the "Sharing Noise" thread under the "technical notes" for one of them. I also mentioned the idea on several other threads, often times they were with optimizing filters. The Sharing Noise thread was intended to be a place for technical notes that I can reference and help with ideas on the technical spectrum, where it later became a gallery for noisy things. I guess that's cool on its own.

I did test your filter before hand! Which is why I left you those suggestions. That's my policy with things. If a filter is interesting and I personally think it has potential, I'll try it and if it lacks in something, I'll say about it. That's the way I work as an advisor for VFX in film production! smile:) I assess people's work, say it's ok or not, and submit critiques where necessary. So I generally don't jump to suggestions unless I see the issue clearly.

I personally think you got something interesting going, but as a guy who's around for too long, I do see where it falls. I'm lately the only active old-time user. Everybody else who used to leave sharp commentaries and suggestions are pretty much gone at this point, sometimes returning but rarely striking a conversation other than "nice filter".

Maybe this time it was just too vague, but next time, I'll leave some proper explanations! smile:) So sorry this time, next time, I don't think anybody's going to be annoyed haha.

[Edited several times just to clarify some points] smile:) Good stuff.
