Notes:

You can safely get rid of the 2nd flip component and use just 1. (Being resourceful!)

You should convert the image to black and white so then you can add some control to the heightmap (levels? threshold? curves? something something something.)

smile;) hope this is useful!

In regard to the height input, I explained this in a video I made for one of your filters that a height map is always black and white. Therefore, I'm really trying to say here is why not take control of your height map black and white for the sake of artistic control. After making the image black and white, you can always use other means such as levels, curves, and thresholds to give some atheistic control over how the height would look in the end.

You can actually get very very interesting results with height maps. smile;) I figure I can try doing some demo with it when I have some more time.

I was also wondering why you weren't using the surface height parameter as often despite it being part of your filter. Out of the 15 presets you got 2 of them where surface height was tweaked. The problem here isn't about how it looks, more about render time. Currently, your first preset takes about 56 seconds to render, where if I make this filter a regular (non surface) filter, the render times go down to less than 4 seconds with minimal difference in output. Since this is a publicly available filter, I think you just need to make the decision on whether to use or not use it.

Buuut that's basically about it! smile;)

The reason I use the surface result on a lot of my filters yet turn off the surface height itself is simple. I use it in order to have access to the lighting environment.also in this particular filter even the slightest bit of surface height gives the image a dark and grainy appearance streaked with deep lines. This is not what I want for a portrait filter. Now this my not be the way the "PROFESSIONALS" do it but this is my way. So there you have it. smile:| I'll show you what I mean.

Gorbacev with surface height.

The 3 presets in this filter with the surface height on are of course a spceial case for this filter only. Like so.(Actually it was a last minute decision to use the surface hight on those 3 persets.) smile:|

Skybase. I have taken your suggestion and updated this filter minus one flip component. And I tryed your trick with the refraction and high pass. That is not what I have in mind for this filter at all. But thanx for the advice. smile:)

Ya know,I upd ated this crazy thing just to turn on seamless tiling on the defualt prese t so what you see here would be what you got when you downloaded. But when I downloaded it just a bit ago IT'S STILL THE SAME! smile:evil: Why is it that if you submit a filter without turning on seamlss tiling and then turn it on and update it it wont take? I've done this before with the same results. I don'e get it. smile:(
