( P.S. : Something that could be added: more light.
A hint. For taking good photos of a gemstone, they do this : they set a "white chamber" ( generally made of thin fabric or similar material ) and they put lights behind, in front, and on the sides of the stone. You clearly cannot have the "white chamber" but you can add lights from different directions in the light settings.
Take care of the color of the stone ( a very good stone should be transparent, but should also have enough color ).

Nice reference pictures! I'll make sure to use the topaz one for lighting. Back lighting is a bit hard though, FF is 2D and unless you use scripts, the only support for 3D doesn't handle volumes, only surfaces. The back light would have to be simulated. Maybe I can hack something in with refraction.
