Nice one! IMO, the background is too grainy, and I'd remove violets and greens from the presets. Also, I'm not sure about the name -- maybe 'worn' instead of 'abused'?

Agreed. That might be offensive to some. I'll change that in the next update. ![]()
Consider this one a work in progress. I am still tweaking filter internals and presets. Also I am thinking about adding some more controls to better influence wear, dirt and stains... Critique is very welcome. --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

And the rendering speed needs improvement. Try to replace Worley noises (Noise > Stones and others) with Perlin Noise -- it's a lot faster.

I intend to go high detail on this one, so I'll have to see where I can compromise some detail for better rendering speed. All in all, I find the filter speedy enough...

hmmm, i didnt mind the grainy one. metal plate like that often has a sort of dirt grain to it with use.

Yup. The grain is now constrained to dirty areas only, as it should be. Previously, the normal map was way too grainy overall.
I have settled for 'worn' for now... ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Metal plate, you say... Is it another one to the collection of those made by angelboiii for Doom?

It's one specific KIND of metal plate that I found missing from the filter library. Wait... was that a rhethorical question, sarcasm or a compliment? ![]() ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

As an experiment, I substituted the Stones components with perlin noises at comparable detail levels. This results in a rendertime reduction of about 25-30% (from 4 min to roughly 3 min). The downside is that I'm getting a different stain dirt & look out of this, which I don't like too much. For texture filters like this one, I'd always prefer quality/realism over fast render performance, because - most likely - I'll only need a few of the variants rendered out for a given project. But, that's just my take on render time. ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Here's the 'Perlin Edition'. Rendertime: 2 min 52 sec on a Dual Core P4 3,2 Ghz...
(VS 4 min 8 sec for the 'Worley Edition' on the same machine). ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

You could put a switch, so people can choose standard quality, or high quality, plus they'd get 2 kinda different looks out of the same filter.

I think I'll leave this one as it is for now.
I'll do an extensive rendering comparison between a dozen or so photorealistic high-detail textures soon to derive some average render-times for these kinds of textures. An initial comparison with angelboiii's very high detail Yellow Rusty Wall Panel seems to indicate that my little 'Worley Edition' here isn't so slow after all. 7min 25s on my test machine (see above) for that one has me in a good mood. ![]() We'll see what rendertimes we can expect in general from high-detail textures like these... --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Nice grit on this — it has some rough character!
Reminds me of the plates I used to stomp on with my dirty shoes when I rode the schoolbus as a kid. Very cool work! I'm enjoying using Filter Forge to create http://torley.com/textures |

BTW, is it just me or does this filter run really slowly? I hope that's what's expected; it takes a long time for me to even preview it.

It's one my slowest filters, that's for sure (along with 'Synthetic Cubism'), but there isn't much I can do about it without loosing detail. Use 'Preview Size > Reduced' and the 'detail level' slider to get faster previews. Alternatively, you can check the 'perlin edition', which is a bit faster. Also be sure to check into some of the other high-detail texture filters around. You'll see its not so bad...

yup, it's a bit slow, but the detail is pretty incredible. the surfacing is actually pitted and i love the scratch lines. very nice work!

What got changed with the update ? I noticed it's about 10-12 seconds faster, but it looks the same really, and you still don't use the Size, pixels to change the repeats which is odd for you. I'm just curious what the update was for/about is all.

Yup, I updated obsolete components, replaced all the profile gradients with blends (faster) and relocated the blurs to where they make better sense. Other than that everything stayed the same.
I'll keep the 'Repeat' functionality since I don't want to change the look of the filter. Alternatively you can use 'Size, pixels'; it works perfectly! ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

----Aren't assemble HSL components even faster than Blends for setting solid colors internally ? Seems like I read that around somewhere on the forums a while back. If not, my bad, I just though I remembered that is all. ![]()
----I saw it ('Repeat' control) was used to 'scale' the the noises some too, so if you did take it out, it would change the overall looks a bit I suppose. But I'm just being picky, this filter is way old and has been kicking butt for what 2 years now, so of course it's easier to speed it up now that we know more about FF and I should just shut up now ha-ha. ![]() jffe Filter Forger |

i saw a commercial on television today that used something VERY close to this plate. it was re-lit and set on an angle, but boy, did i sure think about this filter when i saw that ad. it was a toy commercial, i forget which... maybe 'Bratz' or one of those other asian toy commercials.
