I think the results of this filter would translate well to vector art (like Illustrator's image trace). Some experimenting with my own filters makes me think creating some routines in FilterForge to output "layers" to organize the shapes/strokes in some way (color, depth, size, etc) could be useful ... don't know exactly how yet.

Thanks for your comments. If you look at the filter internals, there is a rotation map generated for each brush stroke, perhaps that's something you can work with. I did not use it, but there is a Depth Sorting, Layer Order, and Layering with Bomber+ which you might be able to use in your quest. Only warning, pretty slow, generating the rotation map is expensive time wise, two 3 color gradients, add, and divide for each brush stroke.
