It looks like I would be dealt a whole lot of splinters if I even thought about brushing up against that wood.
My eye tells me that the wood is in overlapping layers with a fair amount of separation, in the Z, between the grain.

Well, it is supposed to be rough, but you're right. I've tweaked the curves used to generate the grain so the edges don't look so hard and elevated. I just had this idea for how to generate a wood texture all weekend and rushed to create it Sunday night. The theory proved sound, but it needed tweaking. Keep an eye out for the new and improved version tomorrow.
On a side note, I think this is the first filter I've managed to make without having arrows overlap!

Much better!
It sports more of a weathered look now.
Can you make the curves user adjustable to maybe get a small bit of the roughness you had on the original?

The curves have kind of a delicate balance because of what's necessary to make the grain tile cleanly. I might be able to have a simple fade slider between the current style and the old one, though.

I've added an update to do just this. It didn't work quite like I planned, but you can create some interesting wood grains with it. Check tomorrow for the updated filter.
