I wanted to just take some time and look at and evaluate some of the more active Filter Forgers' filters. So I compiled a simple list of 10 or so filters that I think are exceptional. Take a look and let me know which of the 10+ you like the best.

Voldemort
(Who by far has the most filters of anyone in FF)
Pain of Living http://www.filterforge.com/filters/2558.html
I can not believe I have passed by this filter before, it is awesome; however, I think that the preset is not as good as some of the other presets so make sure to look at all the presets.

Voldemort is the only person that I am going to award twice, mainly because of the volume of their work. My next favorite is

"Ringed Planet"http://www.filterforge.com/filters/2840.html
Beautiful filter, and very useful to boot. My only complaint of this filter is the name, it threw me off so much that I did look at it for what it was.

StevieJ

(Before I award him my pick of the month, I just want to give a history of StevieJ. He was the first person to comment on one of my filters, so he has my utmost respect. He seems to try and help everyone as much as possible, and I appreciate this.)

StevieJ's ExtremeMetal
http://www.filterforge.com/filters/2180.html
All I can say about this filter is wow... I think the only problem with filter forge is that it makes good looking filters seems easy, but StevieJ's ExtremeMetal is anything but a simple look. This is my favorite filter from the StevieJ library of excellency...

Carl
(The man who needs no introduction)

Atmosphere
http://www.filterforge.com/filters/2699.html

I like this filter for its shear usefullness in real photo editing. I have already commented on this filter before, but I think it is worth a second applause. Great filter.

Kraellin
(Do not know to much about Kraellin, but I like his work and am eager to see more of it.)

Church 1g
http://www.filterforge.com/filters/2919.html

I am not a huge fan of pattern filters, but I like the colors and look to this particular filter. I also very much like the glass look of this particular filter.

CFandM
(Big scary floating head smile:))

Runny Water Colorizer
http://www.filterforge.com/filters/566.html
(I am a sucker for artistic filters, and I think this is a very unique and useful one. I think it is also neat that you can see "Runny Water Colorizer"'s fingerprints all over the current editor's pick "Runny Water Abstract". CFandM this filter just proves that the ranking system may need to be tweak a wee bit, because this is definitely not a low filter in my oppinion.)

Persidio
(Another floating head... )

Paper Art Frame
http://www.filterforge.com/filters/2729.html
It takes a talented person to make a good frame, and well Persidio is that talented person. Check this frame out, it rocks... enough said.

jffe
(Only Filter forger with an all lower case name... unique, just like his/her filters)

Dot Matrix Tiler
http://www.filterforge.com/filters/1209.html
(Think this is sweet, it has so many different looks, and it seems to have an artistic effect yet to be reproduced. Like it.)

Crapadilla
(Just open his filters, randomly point, and chances are you have picked an editors pick)

Cartography
http://www.filterforge.com/filters/2849.html
(Crapadilla's filters are gold. I think I like all of his filters, but I like Cartography the best, because I think I can use it for so many different purposes. A treasure map for my cousins and kids for easter, a webpage design, and other such things. I think I would buy filter forge for this one filter alone... assuming I had money smile:))

Rawn (RawArt)
(Do not know very well, but good filters)

unda-da-sea
http://www.filterforge.com/filters/2856.html
I have tried to create a filter that reproduces the ambient light from water, and I just couldn't do it; however, Unda-da-sea not only reproduces the ambient lighting effect from the top of water, but it also produces a deepening ocean look as well. Hats off to this filter.

MysticBlueRaven
(Not to be confused with the ordinary blue ravens.)

Flower Power Glass
http://www.filterforge.com/filters/2880.html
Windows are hard to come by, but here you go; one of the best looking stainglass looks in the Filter Forge Library.

For everyone's filters I did not mention, I am sorry. I just didn't want to make this list to large.

Thank you for your Comments I still enjoy Mire alot

Yeah I unfortunatly have an unpopular love of the gross and disturbing and a lack of talent when it comes to it
but a few have made me preaty happy
pain of living
glossy goop
and alien muscle
virology
and slime tube are ones that Im really happy with They worked well with complex mtr files in doom 3 the built in bump and normal maps made it extremely easy to animate in the texture in all 3 axis
I thought alien muscle loked absolutley awesome in doom3 but hey again Ive got a sick and twisted taste when it comes to texture arts and my levels tend to reflect it

Im afraid I wouldnt have the guts to start the sheer number of amazing filters that have been produced would take an imense time to truly judge impartially

All I can say is its a testament to the power of this software

I really hope that future releases only unleash more power into developers hands
like more noise styles more controls and other goodies -cough -cough --moderators
just kidding If I recall there was a feature freeze currently

But I wonder if long term more additions are planned

Good picks Redcap! I definitely agree with your choices and you've put some smiles on the filter authors' faces ^_^ Oh yes, just curious, I just noticed your avatar and was wondering if it represented anything in particular (I'm actually quite hungry now, so first thing I saw was a baked potato -- is that what it is, or have I finally lost it?) ^_^

Hey Redcap, I thought would give you my personal rundown on the FF "Whose Who" from what I've experienced over the past 4+ months since joining the fun smile:)

First, I'm kinda the "FF clean-up crew of simple filters".....almost all of my filters are simple effects that somehow got passed over. I first make effects intended for personal use in my art work....and then share my little creations. The friendly air, feedback, and helpfulness of everyone makes this an exceptional place to work on effects.....so here's to everyone!!! smile:beer: smile:beer: smile:beer:

Not in any particular order.....just all good!!! smile:) Here goes.....

Voldemort....."Master of Distortion" and many other things.....extremely talented.....sells himself short as an artist when most of his filters are works of art in themselves.....and certainly could use any of them to create fine works of art..... smile:) smile:) smile:)

CFandM.....(big scary floating head smile:))....."Master of Intricate Patterns and Abstract Effects".....extremely talented.....helpful to everyone.....and filters were the reason I joined up with FF. If you figure out filters like "Langrangian Twist" and learn how to easily create effects like that, you have achieved "Master Filtermaker" smile:) smile:) smile:)

Kraellin....."Hardest Working Man in FF Show Business".....extremely talented.....excellent pattern work.....the "great grand daddy" of overlay glass filters (Glass Menagerie)....has always been EXTREMELY helpful to everyone.....should be a paid FF employee for all his forum help....Vlad??? smile:D LOL..... smile:) smile:) smile:)

Uber.....recently MIA...."King Snippeteer"....."Master of Speed and Efficiency".....extremely talented.....his work is part of alot of good filters....extremely helful in creating filters and figuring out problems....loves a challenge....done alot of FF "behind the scenes" leg work.....missed!!! smile:) smile:) smile:)

Crappadilla.....never heard of him smile:devil: LOL.... Hell-bent on total filter and world domination smile:D extremely talented....."Master of Theme Filters"....."Reigning King of Featured Filters"....."Reigning King of FF Awards".....did I leave anything out??? smile:D LOL.... smile:) smile:) smile:)

jffe.....resident FF "Lurker" smile:D LOL..... J/K.... extremely talented....."King of the Unknowingly Talented Filtermakers" smile:D .....claims that all his filters are done by randomly plugging in nodes, but I'm not buying it.....he has too many excellent filters.....check out his "Metal Melt" filter and you will see what I mean smile:) smile:) smile:)

Zephos....."Master of Filter Character"....."Master of Theme Filters".....extremely talented.....learnig curve was astonishing.....great personal character in the forums.....great feedback.....can't say enough good things!!! smile:) smile:) smile:)

ssamm....."Master of the useful Filter".....extremely talented.....use a couple filters the most for prepwork.....extremely helpful.....excellent feedback.....all round good guy!!! smile:D LOL..... smile:) smile:) smile:)

There's alot more, but I have to cut this short and run..... smile:) smile:) smile:)

and let's not forget steve. I agree with Kraellin 100%! By far and wide, the Filter Forge forums are the nicest internet community I've been on, and no doubt that a large part of that is because of StevieJ! You can always count on StevieJ's comments to keep your day nice and bright ^_- Needless to say, StevieJ is also the King of Glass with no rival under the sun ^_^

Oh yes, you reminded me StevieJ, I’m really missing ubersev -- no doubt the backbone of the Filter Forge community and his Snippets were the backbone of countless filters (I think my first post ever on the forums was one saying how much I liked Any Angle Rotate, ahahah) ^_^ Hope we see him again soon ^_^

Some other current filter forgers who deserve mention! ~^_^~

Sjeiti
With such legendary filters as Splatter, Baroque Frame II, Rotated Polaroid and my favorite Forest Trails, each and every one of Sjeiti's filters is a unique and memorable masterpiece! Armed with an avatar you couldn't possibly mistake, Sjeiti is also an experienced veteran who is no stranger to the flames of the forge who has given Filter Forge some of it's most valuable treasures ^_^

NothernShadow (Sherry)
Undisputed Master of Art Medium Filters whose incredible filters have been a staple of Filter Forge for almost a year now, whether it's charcoal, chalk or crayons, NorthernShadow has a filter for you! -- well, that and Torley brings up Batik Art in every other conversation we have about Filter Forge ^_-

BlueMysticRaven
Instantly recognizable by an avatar that clearly matches her namesake, BlueMysticRaven is the Queen of Tiling Filters ^_^ Seriously, you have to spend extended periods of time to take in just how detailed and elaborate some of the filter patterns are, such as All That Glitters and Multipurpose Tiles!

Persidio
Without a doubt one of the most active filter forgers around with a talent for pattern filters such as Stencil and Country Quilt as well as frame filters, Persidio has also gotten a reputation as one of the most sociable and friendly people on the forums with a wicked arsenal to match! Oh yes, can’t forget to mention that Persidio has hands down the best and most detailed forum side filter documentation around!

Rawn
With a mastery of noise components and Surface effect Filters few possess, Rawn has some of the best organic textures around such as Iridology and Technorganic Construction ^_^ A texture artist's best friend! Seeing how I’ve done pretty much zero texture filters in my Filter Forge campaign, Rawn’s work is nothing short of amazing to me ^_^

Redcap
Couldn’t possibly miss the creator of the topic, ahahah ^_^ Redcap has an impressive arsenal of noise effect atmospheric filters around and with Grandma’s Button Collection and the upgraded Stone Wall inc, it’s clear that Redcap is rapidly becoming an integral part of the Filter Forge community. ^_^

Oh yes! Looks like we also got some up and coming talent as well! SuKILLhoS has an insanely high filter output rate of filters that to the best of my knowledge, is a new record, McKenzie’s got a compact but highly distinct filter arsenal, and ahimsa might very well become our future Cloth Filter Master ^_^ I very much look forward to what the future of the forge brings!

AS the time zone challenged member of ff I eventually get on to threads, some times thinking what else can be said - but I do have some thing to say and I'm not even going to crack a joke - thanks Redcap for my inclusion in your list its one of the filters I feel most proud of. The comment about the other ff members I agree totally and I have derived great pleasure from there help and friendship and they have even tolerated my bad jokes and foot in mouth desease. And like you StevieJ was the first person to comment on one of my filters and encourage my work and we have built up a friendship in & out of the forum which wouldn't be as nice a place with out him.
See not one joke, and your avatar is obviously a brown paper bag with porridge and cream in it smile:D

I am glad that this post was recieved so warmly, I was nervous to post something like this, but I figured that there were to many good filters that never get noticed by the general public. The only problem with this was there were a lot of good filters I didn't mention. My main intention with this post was to foster awareness of others work because I personally know it is easy to get caught up in the featured filters, or your own filters.

To all of you whom question what my avatar is,

I am not inclined to ruin a good mystery, (though it isn't really that mysterious); however, if you would like to find out what my avatar truly is go to http://www.filterforge.com/forum/read...ssage16131.

Enjoy!

P.S. A little side history into my name "redcap". If you look up redcap on wikipedia it gives the definition of a monster, that is not the redcap I am named after. I derive my call sign from one of my old mathematics teachers. He dubbed me "redcap" in reference to those who work on trains carrying luggage. I was dubbed redcap because my name is infact synominous with the term redcap.
