This is one of those we were discussing earlier that would get culled due to low usage but that should definitely be kept because it is obviously just in wait of the right designer seeing it at the right time.
Nice job.

Eh, I dunno, other than variation #4, which looks like metal fish bones or something, the whole filter is kind of obsolete now that some people have done spider web ones. But thanks for the bump, and for digging up an old filter ha-ha smile:p

I got nostalgic ha-ha, and started messing with this one. A couple examples below, and probably a little update sometime next week.

Ok...your third example has me sold smile:)
Is that done with your modified version, or can that be done with the original?

----The above examples are after messing with the internal wiring for an hour and a half last night, so those are from the updated version which isn't done yet. I'll probably keep working on it over the weekend though, that filter needs an update pretty badly ha-ha.

ok....cool, i will wait for it.
The very first thing I tried to do with FF was chainmaile, and never got anything decent. So this is something I would eagerly look for. I have a bunch of projects that could use good chainmaile, and while photoresources have worked in the past, something nice and tileable would be amazing smile:)

The new versions looking like a good improvement, and I like the non-uniformative smile:)

----Well, like quite a bit of my stuff, it's mostly pattern-based, and if it happens to look like something (even remotely ha-ha) from the real-world when hitting randomize 2 or 3 out of 10 times, then I use that term in it's name. In other words, it's not really about chainmail, it just reminded me of that look sometimes. Anyways, hopefully you'll be able to get at least a little bit of use out of it. smile:D

----Thanks, I like those symmetrical more-or-less looks in patterns myself, but the imperfection is what always makes me look twice. smile:)

----Below are 2 more samples, less "chain-like", but those chain looks are about 95% unchanged, while allowing for some new styles of designs as shown here. Thanks for looking.

You actually did inspire me to take another look at my first attempt at chainmaille, and I actually worked it into something decent.....but I have to say, I kinda like the organic quality of yours better.

Yers looks more authentic, I suck at that kind of thing, and really have no taste for it, which is probably a lot of why I suck at it ha-ha. smile:) Anyways, unless I get anymore ideas over the weekend, I think this update is about done, here are some more last minute teasers.

This is really good work!!! smile:)

I know you don't like my "variant filter" policy for simplification.....but this one seems like it would be quite valid to break up by shapes.....or maybe not smile;) smile:D LOL....

Thanks. smile:) But eh, the *shapes* are mostly just a result of 2 controls, the sharp - smooth checkbox, and the kaleidescope 1-7 shape selector, so not really worth breaking apart. Besides, I made 20 presets, and the random button is yer friend, plus come on, my stuff is nowhere as complicated as like some of volde's and some other really crazy filter makers. smile:p

Hmm, well, I *think*, I could add a color control, and you could have whatever colored background ya wanted I guess. Some folks would want colors, some would want that transparent thing that I don't even really know about. I might just leave it up to the users to add that, I dunno. I like the starkness of black-white, it makes for very dynamic graphics in my eyes, but that's just me.

jffe

P.S. I just went an added the color control, but it has a bit of overlap at the edges and whatnot because of how I achieve the un-uniform look overall, so with color, it looks completely terrible, it will remain black. Good suggestion, it just didn't pan out though. smile:)

----Ha-ha, no worries, it's cool that people even bother to suggest additions to filters, if anything, I take it as a compliment that someone liked it enough to want to help make it better somehow. smile:)
----This filter just won't die, or be still. I added what I'm calling, "Ethereal Mode" to it. See examples below. Barring any unforseen sobriety for the remainder of the weekend, it may be done. smile8)

Numbers 1 & 3 on this last set are really great and could definately be used for a sci fi scene. Like for damaged grills on machinery. smile:)

It keeps getting better. I really like one and four. Four just needs some blood dripping off of it. Three could use a pass with one of Carl's bullet hole filters.

----Thanks, yeah it's really taken on a life of it's own, well, at least compared to how wimpy and vanilla it was to start with ha-ha. smile:)

----Well, yer to blame for this whole update mess aren't ya ? Seems like you pulled this thread out of nowhere ha-ha. smile:p Anyways, yeah, it might very well look more interesting after running it though some other filters. I'ma make every effort to not screw it up and finish it over the weekend, since it already seems to have generated enough interest to bump it from low usage-to-average usage, if I can just not ruin it and submit it to the libraray ha-ha. smile:D

yer to blame for this whole update mess

The new activity and revamp are entirely justified by the original filter and the underlying concept. The poor thing just got overlooked. I predict it will thrive in its new life. smile:angel:

I’m in a similar position in that I have a filter that is ready to be submitted but I know it will not post until Monday so I keep screwing around with it. If I keep it up I’m going to be sorry. smile:|

Finished, not ruined, and submitted 07-09-2007 smile:D Below are 3 "wallpaper" examples of presets, sans the seamless tiling. If ya'll hate it, then blame ronviers ha-ha, he got me interested in trying to make it worth looking at (see = who started this thread) ha-ha. smile:p

Thanks, I think it's a vast improvement, which isn't really saying much considering the original ha-ha, but maybe at least some of the gamers and texture folks can run with it. smile:D For anyone tired of reading about it, or seeing teasers, it should be in the library by tomorrow or Wednesday I would think.

----If I recall, that's umm, preset #5 (variation #4 I guess that would be), set to wallpaper size (1024 X 768) with the seamless tiling off. Which oddly enough, is the 2nd pic from the top of this thread page, the most normal looking chains, at 600 X 600, with tiling on. Go figure eh. smile:D

It's a lot of fun to play around with. I wish I was working on a project that needed chainmail. I added the knockout background so I can run it multiple times on a single image. I hope you don't mind. smile:|

It's been updated (yeah, again ha-ha), just to add the alpha mask see through thinger (that I have no idea about ha-ha), as in the example below. Plus, a slider control to make the background Black-Gray-White and anywhere inbetween etc. This update was just submitted at 3pm on 07-10-2007, and should be in the library tomorrow or Thursday. smile:)

Yeah, I'm not touching this one again for a while, if someone wants a blue background, well, they can add that control, I've done my best now ha-ha. The final-final update (as seen above) should be in the library tomorrow or Thursday. Sorry for dragging this one out people, but hopefully it is/was/will be worth it for the faithful waiting thread bumpers. smile:D
