Mike, wouldn't it be easier to use something like this? (see the attached filter). It uses 3 Perlins as well, but their Roughness on average is lower, so it should render faster, plus there's no HSB Extract/hues involved, which is good for avoiding problems with bump map continuity.

That's absolutely the type of filter I'd use for most situations, especially as part of another filter or part of a heightmap. This noise filter is more for using when combined with traditional texturing and you want a noise that surprises you (that's why the extract is great -- the instant black-to-white contrast). It's still sort of fast, but I think the tradeoff in irregularity for time can sometimes be worth it.
This is a specularity map I made using the default presets of mine and your faster version. (The original is on the left.) They're both pretty similar, but I think there's a little more of that natural decay to the slower version. ![]() |

looks like to me both versions would be useful. vlad's has more of a lower contrast and blur to it, giving a softer decay in your example pic, while mike's has a bit more contrast giving more of that grainy rust feel.
If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Very nice! I based one of my filters in honor of it, with not 3...but 27 different perlins! This is truly great!
Haloo! Enjoy this page while you're here! xD |
