There should be some kind of reward for a filter like this that stays non-low for a very long time. It means it has found its niche and is satisfying a certain number of FF users. Not all good filters can be concrete and grunge.
Nice job Carl. @ronviers

Well originaly they said 8 to 10 days but you know how it goes when the order was finalized the date had mysteriously slipped out to the 25th which is 14 days 4 hour 12 minutes 37 seconds away LOL no only kidding 14 days away my time [ date ], because of the sound card in it [ Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme ] it will not run on XP so it got Vista on it so hopefully some of my odd little programs will run on it - I've read so many mixed reviews, it will have enough graphic power and space to run it properly so hopefully I get use to it and like it,and it doesn't have freeze and other problems which I guess they'll fix all those bugs eventually - have you used it, whats on your computer - you said you built yours - what it got happening inside

I have XP Pro on my system but my Mom is running Vista – new Dell laptop. Her biggest complaints are performance and lockup related. Your system has more horsepower so it will probably be much better. Vista has some annoying quirks but it is pretty. We will all be running Vista eventually. The performance issues will be corrected either with updates, possibly provided by the hardware manufacturers or a service pack. So you are on solid footing for the future.

Some of it will be adjusting to the new Vista way. For example, I was unable to drag to select files and the 'select all' was missing from the menus - little things like that.
I'm sure they introduced an equal or superior way but I do not like having my workflow disrupted - then again I can be a real baby when it comes to that kind of thing.

This week I worked on particle and rigid body dynamics as well as paint effects. Next is expressions and then the embedded script language. After that the introduction will be over and I can begin tutorials that are most related to the vision I have in mind for my first project. For me to remain on schedule I would need to finish my project in the next 90 days but the concept is better and more ambitious than I originally expected so I may end up pushing my schedule back.
I want to do a filter this weekend but I don't have anything in mind - maybe I will do another plug and pray like the last one. @ronviers

I would like to say the process has been enjoyable but mostly it has been difficult and tedious. It will get better when I begin to work in areas I have previously been introduced to. I got a little of that earlier this week when I covered tubes in paint effects. They deal with the revolving of NURBS curves, which I had covered in modeling so it was nice to finally get some consolidation time. I think it will start to be fun in the next few weeks.

It seems it reach a point where you click and it all comes together and some of things that seemed complicate become easy, but mind you I'm not trying to tackle one of the notoriously difficult programs, I'm looking forward to when you can post or send some examples

Yes along with photoshop, Quark, a couple of little paint programs, with the new pc I'll put on and learn Indesign, Golive and dreamweaver - still want a good paint program like corel - I am greedy what are your main programs you use o I have bryce and blender but I haven't really got into them but will some time
My furry little brain [ from a mis-spent youth LOL ] takes awhile to self learn and absorb things so I have enough at the moment - the benifit of a bad memory is you can't hold a grudge for long cause you forget what it's about

What does a good paint program do that Photoshop does not do? I have been wanting to get my hands on one just to have a look around.

I keep it simple; Photoshop for bitmaps, Illustrator for vectors, Filter Forge for textures and Maya to bring it together - plus I don't go far without my camera.
I'm going to have to settle on something for compositing but that is down the road.

I'm not a fast learner but I'm stubborn and sanguine about my limitations. I make no attempt at understanding Maya or Filter Forge, or anything else for that matter, at a quantitative level. I have concepts and visions that i have fantasies of bringing to reality and they don't involve being able to calculate photons doing this or that. I leave the technical stuff for those who care about that part of it - it takes the pressure off.
Doesn't it seem like Golive and Dreamweaver do kind-of the same thing? I have not used either one but reading the description on the Adobe website it made me wonder.

Hey Ron, I don't know how Maya is set up, but behind the scenes programing with Lisp in AutoCad is where it really starts getting interesting......and it's really not difficult to learn at all..... Steve

Maya uses a scripting language called MEL (Maya Embedded Language). I have not covered that part yet, they save that for the last chapter, but it is clear that I will need to know it at some level. Personally I hope to work at the node level as much as possible. Most of the coding I have done has been in assembly language and to be honest I don't even know what a scripting language is. My attitude toward MEL may change after I cover it. I didn't think I would like dynamics either but now I realize it is one of the most important and interesting parts of Maya.
I remember Lisp from a book I read in college but I didn't know it was used for modern day commercial applications like AutoCad. Funny I remember seeing AutoCad running on an original IBM PC in the early eighties. It was drawing the space shuttle as polygons - the system had a whopping 5MB hard drive. The prof had it at our Atari users group weekly meeting. @ronviers

AutoDesk kinda created their own language with it.....called AutoLisp.....
It will definitely come in handy when you start wanting to customize things towards your particular work.......
