It's marble-tastic. smile:D Cool stuff, not sure I need a plasma ball, but I know where to go now if I do for sure. smile:)

Thanks jffe - I needed these for a project I'm working on. I'm not sure how to use them yet but once I get it figured out I will know where to go too. smile:)

Thanks StevieJ!! smile:D
I have submitted an update that enables the intensity of the plasma to be adjusted.
Check out how the height map moves the HDRI reflections away from the center of the sphere so the plasma is always unobscured. smile:D

You're welcome, ronviers!!! smile:D

You could improve the electricity jaggedness by using some slight noise distortion.....or better yet, noise distortion on block or tech noise might do it.....but looks pretty cool the way you have it smile:) smile:) smile:)

Thanks for the tip - can you give me an example of what you're talking about? Or maybe just describe it in a little more detail.

You won't need to look at this one Kraellin - the only cool thing about how I did it was using the height map to move the environment reflections so they do not obscure the plasma - most of the rest I learned from you. Thanks! smile:)

Yes - for sage advice go read your posts in the 'creating filters' forum - you will keep yourself busy indefinitely. smile:D
You can also open up a few of your filters to check out how original your approach is I think you will be very impressed. smile;)

First, don't get me wrong.....it looks totally cool as-is.....just making some fun variant suggestions to play with.....

Swap the perlin with block noise (can try techno or pyramids as well) for some corners and jaggedness.....maybe a little stretch on it.....then run it through a little noise distortion for randomness.....then use Ubers radial gradient to eminate the electricity from the center.....

You could also use multiple noise components on a switch for different types of electricity......but might slow up the filter alot. I would suggest making variants just like your orb series.....even one putting the external image in it.......

Those are great ideas. When I get a chance, maybe next weekend, I will work on some variations and possibly a more realistic one too. I find that as I get closer to reality the render time begins to shoo way up.

Thanks! smile:D

I played with this filter to remove the black around the ball, and mounted the ball on a staff I rendered, a nice magic staff.

Hi Totte, I needed one of these with an alpha so just for fun I played around with hdr for the first time. Makes the old one look dull.

Hey Ron smile:) Looks cool!!! smile8)

I would suggest, if you really want to go super-realistic with this, use ThreeDee's lightning and radial multiply it around a center ball.....it will be slow (depending on your machine), but worth the wait, IMO..... smile;) smile:)

Thanks Totte. smile:) If you’re using the monitor I think you are, then I bet it really does look good - those Cinema displays are amazing.

Great suggestion Steve. smile:) Actually it just took a few minutes to turn my mud texture into something that might make up the elements for a better plasma ball. Unfortunately it started turning into a tweakfest, so I’m shelving it.

Thanks Carl. smile:) Hdr changes everything. It’s only just beginning to sink in for me.

Thanks Ron smile:) – you’ve been posting some beautiful and very creative filters yourself.

Btw, anyone is welcome to use this to make a plasma ball on their own.

Here is a shot of the mud lightning - obviously with a little (and by a little I mean a lot) of tweaking, it could be made much better. Then, like Steve mentioned, it could be radially distributed for a plasma effect - tons more tweaking. smile:(
