very nice, photo-realistic slate! i like your use of the elevation gradient in the end, good idea.

while you have the switch in there, it would be cool to have some more 'traditional' pavement types as well, for instance square tiles or even one big hunk of stone.

of course you could do that as another filter, mapping the texture to the bevel and mortar width to get some nice tile effects smile:)

good one!

slate and other stone has come into high fashion these days in the building industry, mostly for counter tops and that sort of thing. thus, i'd love to see a smooth, polished version of this.

yes, steve. slate can have all sorts of colors and 'veins'. it's also not uncommon to leave it slightly unpolished. that rough look works well on outdoor planter types and stone fencing tops/caps.

Exactly......I've only used this filter for outdoor walks, patios, and fireplaces.....the textures are perfect......but too rough for indoor floors......which is what i think you want.....

Dilla, the filter looks amazing, I especially like this one.

However, the update keeps blocking our rendering queue -- it takes too long to render. Is there a way to speed it up?

Yup, I've already requested for the update to be removed. I'll submit a much faster version once it's gone from the queue.

The slow rendering speed is due to a fix I had to introduce for the 'De La Robia Weave' bond type to look good. I didn't expect that this modification would increase rendering time that drastically. In the next update, I'll have to deactivate the 'De La Robia Weave'.

Edit: I've found a way to speed it up drastically while still maintaining 90% of the original detail. Expect an update soon! smile:D

Alright, update submitted. Rendering times are down to 20-25 seconds on my Dual QuadCore (versus 1-3 minutes in the cancelled update). smile;)

The update is working great. I'd recommend to balance the lightness and the slate color -- in some presets you use Lighting > Brightness of ~360 with a very dark Slate Color. I believe using a default brightness of 100 with sufficiently brighter color would be a better idea.

And the last wish is to have this one as a default preset: smile:D

Hadn't even thought about this. Good point!

Really? Personally I find the current one much nicer regarding color, slate pattern and pavement style. It also looks very mysterious on the filter page... (could be a bit brighter though!) smile;)

The next image shows a 'Slate Layers' setting of 3. Note the increased detail and lessened uniformity across the surface. There is a drawback however: the increase in detail comes with doubled render-times!

i like the gray slate color better also, but i'd prefer to see it on the design that vlad likes. so, that's about par for the course, that we all like something slightly different smile:)

and i'd still like to see this one without any 'brick' or 'tile' or 'paving' marks, just a flat slab of slate.

You know, I might do a 'noise lab' spin-off filter for 'pure' slate, after all.

Btw, could it be that the render-time restrictions for library filters have been tightened? I've tested some older filters on my new machine and some take as much as 4m 51s to render (which would have led to a filter rejection, no?)... smile;)

yes, i think the times have tightened a bit. it's going the way of the presets. we used to be able to upload almost unlimited presets in filters. now only 20. i'm guessing it's around five minutes for a render, but not totally sure of that.

and yeah, the noise lab thing would be good. i'm still playing with that a bit here and there. i've even incorporated a tiny bit into 'the monster' smile:)

Initially, there was no limit on the rendering time, but with the growing number of submissions in the rendering queue this has become a problem (some filters blocked the queue for hours), so we introduced a time-out.
