Carl this is amazing!
Did you do it on the new computer?
Just curious, how long does it take your new computer to render preset one? @ronviers

Yes - I hadn't realized how much detail I was missing out on the old system - the detail now is fantastic - so a highly detailed first filter Quote |

I was wondering what the time difference is from old to new - the lead preset takes 42 seconds to render - what's it on older machines I wonder, what does FF use to render them on
Ps new pc

I like the idea, but the algorithmic look of the distortion is too pronounced -- I'd make it subtler, for example by using Noise Distortion with higher Roughness/Details.

i like the last one the best. and variation #6 of the presets is really quite good! If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Hey, how come I'm not subscribed to this thread?
Personally I think you're taking it in the wrong direction - much of the erosion process *is* procedural. Don't listen to Vlad - what would you rather have an 'Editors Pick' or a 'Ron's Choice' award? Maybe you could use color to show the rifts in the strata as a way to sell the deep scratches. Plus I think the flatness together with the uniform scratch marks could make it look like a machine had been through there - or even badass claw marks.

Here the latest offering of fiddling -the time on my machines has got to 1minute 7 seconds and if it take 4 times the length for rendering on your machine that's a bit of a worry Quote |

What do you think of this version, I've worked on improving the colour texture Quote |

how could you even ask me a question like that of course there is no choice-just one question do your have an awards nite you know red carpet champainge sausage rolls?
The filter changed so much that! think I'll have to make this one version 2

At any premier I sponsor you would get LSD and mushroom rolls. The red carpet would exist purely in you mind but it would have incredibly rich textures.
I think this one is better than the first but I like them both a lot. To me this one looks more like the underside of a horses hoof – at least that is where I plan use it.
I have been doing a lot of modeling lately so it's getting to the point that I have to start choosing textures. @ronviers

that's looking pretty incredible, carl! the colours you are getting in that last preset are quite realistic. it does seem that you are losing a lot of depth as you are progressing though, i'm not sure if that's a good thing. can't wait to see what comes of this one!

i thought i'd detail this one to show you what i dont like on this last one, carl. most of it is very good! there seems to be one small horizontal scoring effect that stands out as not belonging to the image correctly. i marked those small parts in red. the rest i think is very good! and mind you, this is a bit of nit-picking, but those few marks just dont look like scoring to me; they look more painted on. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Kraellin, that's my favorite part. To me, those are the areas of recent activity - without that it all looks static.

lol. well, that's about par for the course one sees one thing; another sees something else. to me they look fake, painted on and the only unnatural part of the image. so, go figure If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I just went back and took a fresh look at all the samples. I like the texture of the very first one(the current one) best and the colors of the last one. @ronviers

I take that back. I like the textures *and* colors of the first one best and I like the colors of the last one best too. They look like two completely separate filters to me - 'Weathered Stone' and 'The Underside of Horse Hoof Material'. @ronviers

FYI
First I did a restart, opened FF and rendered Weathered Stone non-tiling - 2:34.
Next I simply rendered it again - 2:07.
Next I turned on tiling -2:46.
Then I rendered it again with tiling - 2:44.
Then I went into normal running mode; Photoshop (140MB TIFF open), Maya (small model), Word and ten or so instances of Firefox open. Then repeated the same steps to get; 2:55, 2:20, 3:02 and 3:12 respectively.
My PC is more than three years old. Performance wise most FF users will probably be somewhere between yours and mine. Not trying to make a statement about the filter just interested in your new PC's performance. I'm totally jealous. @ronviers

dilemma - I like the chunkyness of first - don't like the lines craig was pointing out and have been softened them off the problem is their's a trade of to hide them you loose all the depth and becoming too smooth[quote] ronviers wrote:

yup, this one looks great! you've got the scoring still, which is good. good depth and variation and the colors blend to each other well. this one i'd have a hard time feeling like it was a filter and not a photo. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!
