I wanna say thank you! I hope more will do this like you do, cause its really helpfull to have those small little snippets understanding it better. I sometimes have snot in my eyes and seem to get lost in the woods with all of the options in filterforge, but this helps.

Nice simple, yet, cool snippet. IMO, very useful for authors that use the Surface filter/component. On a random whim, I used your snippet to make my own experimental/exploration filter... The controllers aren't meant to be user friendly -- but, still, I thought I'd attach my creation here as a tribute to your tutorial/snippet. I.e. Maybe my presets are potentially interesting? (Otherwise, just ignore it -- as it is a bit a mess of confusion...) flatten inspired.ffxml |

Hopefully it's better later than never, but I also want to thank Redcap for this filter. The texture results work pretty well for subtle displacements maps. Here's a quick example of where I used the US flag as an overlay:
