Very nice!

I'd recommend to tighten up the controls and centered the filter around the first preset.

Tighten up the controls so that the good look doesn't break with excessive adjustments or randomization, and I'd also suggest to add some presets like the one below smile:D. Better to submit this as an update, not as a new filter.

See, I told you this was a nice one! smile;) smile:D

And I agree with Vlad: The filter should be tightened up until it reliably produces output of the quality demonstrated in the default preset, as that's the (arguably) best one! That means removing those controls which introduce to much of an unpredictability and/or narrowing their range of effect.

Control naming should also be reviewed in the light of the 'engraving' theme set forth in the filter name. Personally, I'd remove the possibility for square kaleidoskope patterns...

I have. Just set it to Kaleidoscope 7 only which is what made that, and taken out the dark switch, and a few other things too smile:D, and lowered some of the number settings.

ya know....I was messing around in your filter and tried swapping out your perlin noise with other nodes like techno, cells, blocks etc...and it gave some interesting variations on the patterns.
I hooked them up to a switch so you could swap between the pattern styles...just in case you some more ideas how to expand this smile;)

Heya Rawn.. um.. I have about 50 versions of this filter now LOL, some of them are with different nodes. Have you tried changing the formula's on the nodes too? Gets even more interesting when you do smile:D, and adding more curves and things. I think it's one of them never ending type of filters.. I've played with the mirror options in the profile gradient, moved the offset around in there too, and all sorts smile:).

LOL don't get me started! Nice one though Craig smile:D. Should see some of the variations I have on this filter smile;), mind if I post them I'll get a when will you send that filter in, requests. I've done ones with different curves, more curves, extra nodes attached to different curves and places, even did one with the tile to see what would happen and well its sweet smile;) smile:D. Even got a cool wedding gown like satin fabric from one of the variations.

Looks good now, and its fast! smile:)

Small tip: you can replace the whole "3x Extract HLS into Assemble HLS" construct with a single blend component. smile;)

Also, don't neglect the potential of the 'reflection blur' control. Some metals are rather blunt instead of shiny.

Yep am learning load's and it helps when other filter creators give you input, which I really appreciate, specially when its advice on how to make something work better smile:D.

But mainly I am having fun seeing what combinations I can come up with. I love that changing a small portion can created something totally different, or even make what you believe is a great filter even better.

Looks like you somehow inverted the fine-detail engraving in this update. Now it's more like a relief. smile;)

But maybe that could be made into a feature (i.e. become a control).

LOL, I didn't do much, just added the things you suggested plus tweaked the brightness a little bit, and fixed the the color which I had subdued a bit when I did the v0.2 version update.

So the relief might be created from the blur slider.

This is just my personal taste, but I'd never put versioning in the name of a filter (unless it was a snippet). smile;)

Some suggestions on control naming:

Colour ---> maybe: "Base Color" or "Tint"
Matt to Metal ---> Metallic
Matt to Metal Blur ---> Reflection Blur
TPattern Offset H ---> Pattern Offset H
TPattern Offset V ---> Pattern Offset H
Tile increase ---> maybe: "Tile Detail"
Tile Emboss Swap ---> sounds confusing... "Emboss Style" perhaps?

The Order of controls is also important. Never use automatic ordering! I'd always sort them for importance, starting with the most generic/global controls at the top and putting all the 'detail' controls at the bottom. Furthermore, controls should be structured into logical/functional groups. For example: Metallic and Reflection Blur both control shading, so these should be grouped together.

Another thing I noticed: Take the default preset and drag the color to a white. Notice how the engraving detail gets lost when nearing pure white. This is the kind of thing that happens when you don't separate the 'color' part of a filter from the 'height' part. Below I've attached one possible solution to the problem. Note how the color map is generated from the heigth map via an elevation gradient. In the case of a color change the height map now stands completely unimpressed, as it should be. smile;)

I've added a 'Relief Invert' control to illustrate what I mean. To me it looks better when not inverted, but... that's just me! smile;)

Um.. you would never tell that I had no clue you could do set them in order... (Okay found it, and Cool!!)

Yep I was having a few issues with black and white. Am still learning and sometimes I just can't figure out how to solve issues I come across smile:(.

Sweet downloaded that to see what you did, and I notice you put a profile gradient in and moved the colours from the node smile:D. Thanks for tweaking it and showing me Dilla, it really helps. I'll have to start reading that Wiki soon to work out were I am going wrong. Um.. either that or start taking apart your filters.. choices, choices.. smile:D

Have um tweaked your tweak now, I added another profile gradient so the dark isn't as dark and changed it to reflected smooth and blended them together.

Ah, will take note on the update numbering, like no need to do that smile:D just thought it would help people know I have updated.

Nah! I appreciate the help, cause I've only been at this for a little while. There's still loads to learn and I'm not necessarily building a filter the easy way smile:D. So pointers are a great help.

Mind not sure if I should do another update lol! Specially seen as its stuff you did, mind I can change the info and say with Dilla's assistance smile:D.

Strange. Could it be that you first disconnected the 'color branch' from the filter tree and then reconnected it after you did the changes? If so, you've lost all the different color values stored with the presets the moment you disconnected that color control. Controls on unconnected branches don't show up in the "Filter Controls" panel and consequently don't have any preset values stored for them. Upon reconnecting, all the presets would then receive the color value of the default preset.
