Looks good to me.....but if I had to make any improvement suggestions, maybe a more gradual fade to the ouside of the rings......and maybe lessen the number of drops and rings.....but all'n all, quite useful as-is.....

I haven't downloaded this one yet, but looking at the control names and examples, it seems to be missing an *amount o' drops* type of control ? If there is none, might that not make good sense as a control option/challenge ?
![]() jffe Added: Well, I felt stoopid there, so I grabbed it. It doesn't seem to have a control for the number or even approx. number of drops. I did see the ripple control, and that's a nice bonus to be sure. Hate to be picky, but what about if it's just as we say "sprinkling", and not pouring down rain ? ![]() Filter Forger |

It would certainly be possible to add such a control... ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Alright, got it working...
...but I need to do some more render-tests. On my snailish home machine (1GHz) the rendering time has gone up from 1m 19s to 1m 39s. Implementing this particular control requires considerable infrastructural additions to the filter. ![]() A preliminary test version: Rain Ripples V2 BETA.ffxml --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

It adds about 3 seconds (from 9.4 to 12.2) on my dualcore here, but well worth it, for sure. Makes it look so much more realstic in some cases with fewer drops, nice work yet again.

i realize in order to have ripples, you have to have a water surface to have ripples upon, but i was wondering if it would be possible to map the imported image, in this case, the life preserver, and then put the water surface and ripples on only part of the image? you know, instead of a total water surface, just have some puddles with the ripples, but not all over.
If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

You could use a selection in PS to achieve that effect, no?

Looks like I'm going to have to change the filter description: A simple distortion / refraction effect filter that simulates rippled water surfaces in the pouring rain. ![]() ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

uhm, probably. also, i havent actually looked the filter yet, but it strikes me that you've got a good water surface filter there too, if you minused the ripples. how bout some minor waves, or one big ripple going outward? If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

I'll have to admit I'm not so sure about the differenced ripples. While they may be more physically correct, they look kind of ugly in my book...

You could have a checkbox for (Realism or Surrealism) or something, that way people trying to make really realistic stuff with this can choose Realism, and if you want it for a kinda, not so real projects.
Only if you want to keep the blends of course, you could take them out completely, it is your filter. I thought the realism looked good though. Roses are #FF0000
Violets are #0000FF All my base are belong to you. |

What about some oblong/oval ripples, like 1 or 2 and the rest plain circles ? I've never really studied water ripples, but it seems like they spread out a bit while remaining *round*. Anyways, just an idea.
