LOL... someone should 8bit-ify this for instant shoot-em-up bosses!

Oooh! Is there a way to do that?
I was just thinking of using it for Flash games as-is, but having a little "Retro" checkbox would rule! I'm going to update this one quite a bit once I get better at this. ![]() |

Didn't like the results for 8-bit, so I just threw it into a checkerboard. Looks great IMHO, like a high-quality 16-bit sprite.
Before I release the filter, though, is there any way, other than a blend for each channel, to kill the bump-mapping? The filter as it currently stands runs a lot slower than I would like, and moreso than is neccessary considering what the plugin actually does. I'd like to see some kinda logic programming in future versions of Filter Forge, so we can tell it "Don't EVEN waste cycles on ANY of these filters if this control is set to its minimum / not checked." And then just flag the filters. At the very least, you'd think it could parse the branches of a switch before it does any rendering... :/ |

The bad boys in your filter are the Blur component and the Perlin Noises, Worley Noises and Noise Distortions...
You might be interested in the wiki articles on Noise Detail and Noise and Blur regarding the remedy. ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

Crapadilla: I have one slider which governs the roughness of the Worley Noises. (Defaults to 0.)
There's only one blur, currently, and it's a necessary evil. It fixes some strange horizontal lines which pop up when the dynamic lighting interacts with the heightmap. I think this is caused by the sampling method used in kaleidoscope. Set it to 0 and set the Armor Type to cells, to see what I mean. The blur is limited to the 0-1 range, because anything above that does waste detail like the articles say. If we just had a simple "flip texture" function, it would have saved me a lot of trouble and also not caused this particular artifact. I suppose I could remove all the Worleys and replace them with a single Perlin, but that would drastically alter the way the filter works. As it stands, you can do blobs, rocks, and spaceships. I feel it's important to have that kinda diversity... Or do you suppose I should separate it into several different plugins? StevieJ: Obviously, it means that you have successfully acquired a lock on the frog. Releasing a missile attack at this point will destroy the frog, possibly netting you bonus points if other nearby enemies have also been targeted. There's an update in the queue with pixel support, which I've labeled "retro." As soon as that one clears, I'll submit the LATEST version, which is really cool and features a perky "toon gloss" finish using a technique I've seen used in a -lot- of organic metal filters, as well as a nice depression around the core, forming a sort of "socket" into which the core fits. And yes, these new things have sliders which can be reduced to 0, or checkboxes which can be unchecked, to get results similar to version 1 of the filter. ![]() |
